Dawson County Tigers preparing for season at North Forsyth camp

Dawson County High School, Dawson County High School, Sports, Team FYN Sports

With the regular season only weeks away, high school teams in the North Georgia area know that they have to take every chance they can to get better. That’s exactly what the Dawson County Tigers and several other teams from the North Georgia/metro-Atlanta area are doing this week at the North Forsyth High School contact camp.

The camp started this morning at 9 a.m. and lasted until around noon. Each team had a chance to play in a scrimmage game twice. Teams will return again tomorrow at the same time.

The scrimmage games were played in a format that allowed seven to eight minutes of possession time for each team. After time ran out the teams would change possession. Plays were stopped at first contact with the ball carrier.

The Tigers scrimmaged Southwest DeKalb for the first game. This game was played at a slower pace so the Tigers could rotate players. Junior Varsity and Varsity teams were present for the Tigers, so the rotation schedule allowed playing time for both teams.

An interception caught for the Tigers in their first scrimmage game against Southwest DeKalb High School.

Dawson County scrimmaged Collins Hill in the second game. Although this game was played in the same format as the first, it was played at a faster pace to focus on moving the ball and gaining yardage. Each game lasted an hour and a half.

“We’ve got a very young squad, a lot of these guys are just trying to get their feet wet before we officially kick off next week,” said Sid Maxwell, head coach for the Tigers. “[We’re] Just trying to get another chance to come out and play somebody.”

Maxwell said that this camp is the third contact camp for the Tigers this summer, and they are gearing up for the start of their mandatory practices next week.

The Dawson County Tigers boys basketball team headed over to Flowery Branch last night, Nov. 19, and came back to Dawsonville with a 55-36 victory.

The Tigers (2-0) dominated for much of the game on defense. Dawson County held the Falcons (1-3) to single-digit scoring in each of the first three quarters on the way to the nearly 20-point win.

Tigers coach Eric Herrick said it was a “good win” due to the team being without senior swingman Jasper Gibson.

Senior Eli Burruss led the way for the Tigers with a double-double. The 6-foot-5 forward scored 14 points and pulled down a team-high 18 rebounds. Burruss also added two steals for the Tigers in the win.

Junior point guard Mason Barnes scored a team-high 16 points, while adding five assists and three rebounds.

Campbell Reed, senior wing player, put up 13 points to go along with four rebounds and two steals.

Dawson County opened the game on a 20-8 run through the first quarter and never looked back en route to the big victory over the Falcons from Class AAAA.

The Tigers took a 27-12 lead into halftime after both teams struggled to put points on the board in the second quarter.

Flowery Branch tried to mount a comeback in the fourth. Trailing 46-16 at the start of the final frame, the Falcons put up 20 points as Herrick began pulling his starters to get backup players experience on the floor.

But a pair of dunks from junior center Max Tierney in the second half of the fourth put the game away for Dawson County.

The Tigers don’t take the court against until Saturday when the open play in the North Forsyth Thanksgiving Tournament.

Dawson County will face Creekview (1-0) from Class 6A beginning at 2:30 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 23, at North Forsyth High in Cumming.

The Tigers will open play in Region 7-AAA on Dec. 3 when they welcome Fannin County to Dawsonville at 7:30 p.m.

Dawson County High School, Team FYN Sports

The Dawson County Tigers came out on top over the Pickens County Dragons 16-10 in a pre-season spring scrimmage on Friday night.

The first half of the game was a display of the defensive strength of both teams with the score tied at 0-0 going into the half. The Tigers had a couple of high points offensively, with an interception by Hunter Barron in the first quarter and a turnover in the second quarter after a Dragons fumble.

Toward the beginning of the game, Tigers starting quarterback Max Moon stepped out of play due to a head injury, and

Tigers look Good To End Spring

Sports, Team FYN Sports

Ending the 2018 Spring Football regiment, the Tigers made their way up Hwy 53 to face the Dragons of Pickens County in the newly renovated Dragons Stadium.  The 2018 Tigers were able to get a look at a some new faces in positions that were left void after last year.  With the loss of the 2017 seniors, Coach Sid Maxwell made a few moves to fill some very important holes in his offense.

Sevaughn Clark

The first of those was in Sevaughn Clark stepping in to the quarterback position.  Clark saw a little action in the 2017 season and with the game at Pickens, it looks to be his when they play for real in August.  Clark preformed very well as he provided most of the Tigers running attack.  With accuracy, Clark can strike up the band this year giving the Tigers a deep ball option in an offense that keeps you on your toes with the running game. The second major move is T.J. Wilson switching to the other side of the ball.  At defensive end last year Wilson set the pace for the rest of the Tigers in their attack on the opposing offense.  Wilson at running back and tight end for the spring game preformed as if he had played there for many seasons.  This move will give the Tigers a sizable threat with the strong ball carrier and the hands to catch the ball.

Ethan Cameron

In the receiving corps, three young men proved they are ready.  Ethan Cameron, Hunter Barron and Dakota Sonnichsen ran excellent routes and had the receptions to keep the Tigers in the fight. Over all the Tigers looked really good on defense as well and have all summer for Coach Maxwell to work on the few shortcomings in the game against the Dragons.  In a spring scrimmage where its more about seeing what you have and what you need to work on, the points on the board are still important to some.  The Tigers fell in this one by a score 42-31 to the Dragons of Pickens County.

Lady Tigers cruise to victory, Tigers come up short in OT

Dawson County High School, Sports, Team FYN Sports

DAWSON, GA – Saturday, Jan 6, the Dawson County Lady Tigers (9-7, 1-3 Region 7-AAA) hosted the Forsyth Central Lady Bulldogs (7-9, 0-2 Region 5-AAAAAAA) and although this was a non-region contest, the ladies from Dawson County showed up ready to play. This was the second time this season that these to programs met on the hardwood, as Dawson’s varsity girls took a 19-pt victory on the Lady Bulldog’s court on Dec 16.

Not taking their second meeting for granted, Dawson County started the game strong and finished in the same manner, leaving no doubt that the best team won Saturday afternoon.  The final margin?  A whopping 30 points, the biggest loss served to the Lady Bulldogs this season!  Final score: 66-36.

With a dominating 30-pt victory and more than 60-pts on the scoreboard, the Lady Tigers clearly know how to shoot a basketball.  Leading the scoring for the Lady Tigers in her first game back from injury was Kaylee Sticker – with 19 points (including four 3 pointers).  She was followed by Sophia d’Oliveria with 10 points, respectively.

Dawson County head coach Steve Sweat also had plenty to be proud of in the effort of his girls on the defensive side of the basketball, providing a balanced performance of defensive pressure and accurate shooting offensively.

The Lady Tigers will be at home on Tuesday hosting Union County (11-4, 3-1) in what should be an exciting game for Region 7-AAA.  The Lady Panthers are coming off a four game win streak and currently sit tied for second overall in the region (with North Hall).  Tip-off is scheduled for 6pm and you won’t want to miss this one.  Union County has a reputation for traveling well, so if you’re a fan of your Tigers you’ll want to make it a point to get to the game early and cheer for your varsity girls and boys!

On the boys side, the Tigers (12-4 overall, 4-0 Region 7-AAA) took a tough loss to a strong Forsyth Central Bulldogs team 63-57 in overtime.  This was the second consecutive night the Tigers forced overtime against a strong team.  Just one night prior to this matchup, the Tigers took the victory over East Hall in Gainesville, 94-91.

Though head coach Chad Pittman was proud of the effort of his team in this game, the Tigers unfortunately did not appear to have the energy to hold off the Bulldogs in the overtime period.  They fought hard and played well, and despite the loss they showed everyone in attendance why they are the team to beat in Region 7-AAA.

Dawson County was led in scoring by Jeremiah Crumley with 25, followed by Cullen Reed with 22 and Campbell Reed with 7.

The Tigers will hit the hardwoods again Tuesday night at 7:30 when they host Union County (13-2, 3-1), who’s only region loss came by the hands of East Hall (77-61) on Jan 3.

Dawson Tigers drop close contest against West Hall; Turn attention to White County

Sports, Team FYN Sports

The Dawson County Tigers are one possession away from a perfect season. Last Friday, September 15, West Hall, a 4A-Region 7 favorite, managed to hand the Tigers their first loss of the season, but it wasn’t easy. At the end of the first quarter Dawson held a 7-3 lead, but their early touchdown would be the only time the offense found paydirt for the rest of the night.

West Hall scored a touchdown before the half, and both defenses came out swinging for the fences in the third; holding each other scoreless for 15

minutes. The Tigers kicked a field goal in the fourth, forcing a tie; but West Hall’s kicker had enough leg and accuracy to put it away for the Spartans, 13-10.

Now 2-1 overall, with a 29-14 win over Chattooga (Summerville, GA) and a 9-0 skunking of 7A-Region 5’s Forsyth Central (Cumming, GA); the Tigers turn their attention to 4A-Region 7 White County (4-1), who is coming off a big 28-18 win over a very talented North Hall squad (3A Region 7). The last time these two teams met on the gridiron, the Tigers took the Warriors to the woodshed, winning 46-0. This year’s contest will most likely be much more competitive as both teams bring solid talent and experience on both sides of the football.

Kickoff is scheduled for 7:30pm in Cleveland, Ga.

Dawson Takes Revenge on Fannin

Dawson County High School, Sports, Team FYN Sports

On Friday night the Fannin County Rebels hosted the Dawson County Tigers. Last season Fannin beat Dawson by a score of 31-15. Last years game was something that Dawson had in their minds as they began the game. The Tigers came into this game hot, after beating Union County by a score of 57-26. Fannin County had a week to recover after playing Greater Atlanta Christian.

The opening kickoff was squibbed by Fannin and Dawson County took possession at the 35 yard line. On the img_1276first play from scrimmage Tigers QB, Coey Watson, found his receiver, Austin Young, in the middle of the field for a 65 yard touchdown. The Tigers tried to surprise the Rebels by going for two and were stopped short. The Rebels then took control at the 20 on their first possession, the Dawson defense followed Fannin QB, Brad Davis’ eyes, and intercepted the pass around the 30 yard line. The very next play Watson was able to find his man in the end zone. 45 seconds into the game Dawson County had a firm grasp on the game with a 14-0 lead.

The Rebels offense continued to struggle as Senior WR, Cooper Earls had to come out of the game due to injury early in the first quarter. Throughout the first the offense was unable to gain more than a first down, giving Dawson County favorable field position all night. The Tigers would go on to score another passing touchdown and a field goal before the opening quarter ended. At the end of the first the Tigers lead by a score of 24-0.

The revenge minded Tigers continued to take out last years frustrations as the scoring continued in the 2nd img_1346Quarter. Coey Watson continued his arial attack during the remainder of the half leading his team on scoring drives four times in the 2nd, all of which ending in a touchdown, two of which were rushing. Dawson running back Peyton Myers would take the ball in from just a few yards out with under 5 minutes left and then again before halftime. At the half Dawson county was leading by a score of 52-0. Because of the score at the half, the mercy rule was applied, which means the clock continuously runs for the remaineder of the game.

The Rebels had a new face behind center at the beginning of the second half, Junior QB, Tyler Norton came into the game. During his first drive he found his receiver for a couple yards but came up short on 3rd down. Dawson County also made a QB change as Junior, Connor Bearden, stepped in. Neither team was able to move the ball during the 3rd.

During the 4th Quarter the Rebels and Norton were finally able to get into the end zone with about 8 img_1545minutes left in the game, when Jacob Reece took the ball in from two yards out. During the final minute of the game the Tigers fumbled the football near midfield. The Rebels took possession with under 10 seconds left and Norton was able to find an open man down the sideline and scored as the final buzzer sounded. The game ended with Dawson County winning by a score of 52-13.

The Rebels now find themselves at 0-3 in the region. Fannin County has all but been eliminated from playoff contention.

The Tigers find themselves at 3-0 in the region, placing them just behind GAC in the region standings.

Next week the Rebels head to Lumpkin County to take on the 3-4 Indians.
