Lady Tigers Come Up Short To The Trojans

Sports, Team FYN Sports

The Lady Tigers traveled to the northern end of Hall County on Monday for a region game against the Trojans of North Hall.  It was a game that Dawson’s offense couldn’t get anything going as they faced a strong Trojan team. The Trojan defense committed four uncharacteristic errors to aid the Lady Tigers in putting up the one run scored.

As stated above the Lady Tigers put up one lonely run and it came in the top of the first as Carol Drake reached on an error by the Trojan shortstop allowing Drake to advance to second and still third base with Brandi Williams at the plate.  Williams also reached on an error after a hard-hit grounder to second and was botched by the Trojan player.  Drake crossed the plate as an unearned run for Dawson.  Offensively that would be it for the Lady Tiger scoring. Carol Drake and Kaselyn Martin would be the only players to reach base by hits off of a very strong Trojan pitcher in K. Chase who had ten strikeouts on 82 pitches.

North Hall would score five runs with on each in the third, fourth and sixth adding two in the fifth for the 5-1 victory over Dawson.  Maggie Schandera coming off of a preseason knee surgery has pitched very well this year and will continue to do so.  In this game, Schandera threw 77 pitches(59 strikes) giving up 5 runs with two being earned and eight hits in the loss.

Next up for the Lady Tigers will be on Tuesday, Aug. 28th at home against Fannin with a start time of 5:55PM

Tigers Fall After Losing Lead Early To Trojans

DCHS Baseball, Sports

The Dawson Tigers took a trip across county lines on Friday for a head to head meeting with region opponent in the Trojans from North Hall.

The visiting Tigers started the afternoon scoring with a first-inning home run by Sapp followed by the 2, 3, and 4 batters going in order to end the top half of the inning.  In the bottom half, it didn’t take long for the Trojans not only to answer the Dawson run but also to stretch out to a 3 run lead. Dawson added 1 run in the second and another in the third for their final run in the game.  The Trojans wouldn’t need any more runs to seal a victory.  With 2 insurance runs in the bottom half of the second, they held a 3 run margin of victory in the end.  Cramer got the start for Dawson and was credited with the loss going 0.2 innings.  In his outing, Cramer threw 38 pitches( 13 being in the strike zone) allowing 4 walks, 0 hits, 1 strikeout and 4 runs(1 earned).  Goodwin came in early as relief going 5.1 innings with 2 runs allowed on 3 hits, 2 walks, and 3 strikeouts on 71 pitches(46 being strikes).  The Tigers defense committed four errors accounting for 5 of the 6 Trojan runs.  Leading the Tigers at the plate, J. Verhoven went 2 for 2 with 1 RBI followed by Allen who was 2 for 4 with 1 run scored.

Trojans Score Early And Often In Win Over Dawson

Sports, Team FYN Sports

Coming off of a shut out loss the Region leading Lady Vikings of East Hall the Lady Tigers found themselves in a must win situation.  Facing another strong team in the Trojans of North Hall proved to be too much on Wednesday.

Dawson struck first to take a quick 1-0 lead in the top of the first inning.  That lead was rapidly relinquished as the Trojans scored runs in the bottom of the first with 5 on the board.  The North hall offense continued to see the ball well and scored 2 in the second, 2 in the fourth and 5 big runs in the fourth to total 14 runs in the victory over Dawson.  The Lady Tigers scratched out 1 additional run in the top of the fourth but Dawson couldn’t get a rhythm going against the Trojan’s pitcher in the 4 inning game.

The Dawson defense committed 7 errors in the game that contributed with only 2 of the 14 runs being earned.  Maggie Schandera took the loss with 79 pitches in 3 and 1/3 innings. The Lady Trojans put up 14 runs on 12 hits that included 3 home runs.Bella Henson and Brea Crane had hits in the gams with Henson and Carol Drake crossing the plate for Dawson County’s 2 runs.

This loss wraps up the 2018 season for the Lady Tigers of Dawson County High School.

Lady Tigers Edge Out Lady Rebels

Sports, Team FYN Sports

On Tuesday the 25th of September the Lady Tigers traveled to Fannin Co. High School to face off with the Lady Rebels in the last game of the 2018 regular season. The Lady Tigers coming in to this game 9-12 overall and 5-7 in region play were looking to notch one more win before the region tournament starts up in the next few days.

The Lady Rebels started the scoring in the bottom of the first inning putting up 1 run and another  in the second to carry a 2-0 lead heading in to the top of the third.  Dawson didn’t stay quiet for long with 2 runs of their own by way of 1 walk, a single and a pass ball to tie up the game at 2 each.  The fourth and fifth innings had the Lady Tigers strike again.  The 4th inning runs came on 2 singles(Martinez and Henson) and 1 error.  The 1 run in the 5th  proved to be huge for Dawson as it would turn out to be the difference in the game.  Brandi Williams reached on a bunt single and scored later in the inning on a Fannin error.  The 5-2 score held until the bottom of the seventh when the Lady Rebels made a last inning charge with 2 runs falling short for a 5-4 Dawson victory.  Maggie Schandera took the circle for Dawson for the 7 inning victory.  On 79 pitches Schandera allowed 4 runs( all 4 unearned) on 5 hits with 3 strikeouts.

Carol Drake, Brandi Williams, Olivia Martinez and Bella Henson led at the plate for Dawson.  Kaselyn Martin and Kendall Martin both coaxed walks for the Lady Tigers.  The Lady Tigers will take the field on Saturday morning in game 1 of the region tournament against these same Lady rebels.

Dawson Puts Up Double Digit Score On Denmark

Sports, Team FYN Sports

On Monday the Lady Tigers of Dawson traveled just one county over to play a non region game at Denmark High School. The Great Danes are a new program in Forsyth County that brought in good players from other local high schools.

Dawson stepped to the plate in the top of the first and took an early lead that would prove to be enough for the win.  Scoring in all 5 innings, the Lady Tigers opened up an explosion of 18 runs against their opponents.  Dawson scored 5 in the first, 1 in the second, 2 in the third, 1 in the fourth and a huge 9 runs in the fifth to add an exclamation point to the big win.

Leading the offensive attack for Dawson were Brandi Williams(3-5 with 1 RBI and 2 runs scored), Maggie Schandera(1-2 with 3 RBI and 3 walks), and Lauren Tow who was 2-3 with 2 RBI and 2 runs scored.  Dawson had 15 base runners reach by walk. The Lady Tigers sent two ladies to the circle with Schandera and Martinez combining to throw 63 pitches,  Scandera went 4 innings with 3 hits, no runs and 1 strike out.  Martinez allowed 3 hits, 2 runs both earned and had a strike out. Schandera earned the win for the Lady Tigers.

Cherokee Bluff is next for Dawson as they travel to Flowery Branch to face the Bears.  Tuesday is the day and 5;55 pm is the start time.

Tigers Get Comeback Win Over Trojans

Dawson County High School, Sports

The Tigers of Dawson County cleated up to face Region opponent in the Trojans of North Hall at home last Wednesday afternoon. The Tigers reached deep down inside and fought to earn a win in the high scoring affair.

North Hall started the scoring in the first inning pushing one run across the plate but saw Dawson even things up in their half. The scoreboard saw zeros for the Trojans heading into the top half of the seventh. Plating 6 runs in the last ditch effort, North Hall fell short to the Tigers by a four-run margin.  Taking the mound for Dawson was Sapp throwing 93 pitches over his 5 innings of work.  Sapp allowed just 1 run on 5 hits, 1 walk, and 9 strikeouts in his dominating performance.  K. Kelly came into work 2 innings in relief of Sapp.  In his two innings, Kelly gave up 5 runs(4 earned) 4 hits, and 2 walks on 59 pitches.  The defense behind the Dawson pitchers committed three errors in the game.

After the Tigers quick first inning run, things went a little quiet until the fourth.  The batters found new life with the scoring of seven huge runs. The Tigers tapped out 7 hits in the inning as well as 1 walk and a hit bat’s man.  Dawson added 2 insurance runs in the 6th inning to extend the lead to 10-1 at that point.  As stated above, North Hall put up six in the last inning charge but fell short giving the Tigers a 10-6 region win.  Several Tigers had an excellent day at the plate with Sapp going 3 for 4, scoring 2 runs and knocking in 2 runs, Allen was 2 for 3, 1 RBI and 3 runs scored, Lewis-1 for 2 with an RBI.  Burt and Sapp had a stolen base.  Allen and Sapp both homered for the Tigers.

Dawson Gets Win To Move Forward In Playoffs

Sports, Team FYN Sports

Last Friday the #2 seeded Tigers of Dawson welcomed in the 3rd seeded Rebels of Haralson County for a first-round game of the GHSA State Playoffs.  Both teams came in ready to play and advance with the ultimate goal of reaching Mercedes Benz Stadium in Atlanta.

Coach Maxwell had his team fired up as they took the field in front of their home crowd.  After suffering their only loss in the 2018 season to the eventual #1 seed in GAC, the Tigers felt as they can compete with any team at any level in Georgia High School.  On this night there were never any doubts.  Sevaughn Clark led his team to 44 points with an outstanding game both on the ground and through the air.  Clark was 11 of 14 passing for 151 yards and had 15 carries for 113 yards rushing and 2 touchdowns. Several Tigers carried the ball for Dawson with Ahmad Kamara leading all with 18 touches for 175 yards with 1 touchdown.  Senior Noah Brock and Junior Shawn Thomas also stepped into the end zone for Tiger touchdowns in the game.  Ryan Glass had 7 catches for 112 yards and a score.

Defensively the Dawson tacklers played very well allowing 273 total yards to the Rebels.  Haralson stayed with the game plan of rushing the ball.  The Rebels had zero yards through the air on the night.  The Rebels managed 3 scores in the game with 1 two-point conversion in an effort to make it a one-score game in the third quarter. Haralson ran into a buzz saw defense from that point forward.  The Tigers front and linebackers stepped up to shut down the Rebels offense.

With the 44-22 victory over Haralson, the Tigers advance to the second round and will travel to play the no. 1 seed Canes of Monroe Area.  This Friday night has these two teams rated pretty even on paper but everyone knows that’s not where games are won.  Congratulations to the Tigers on a great season and best of luck in keeping it going with a big win on Friday night.  GO TIGERS!

Tigers Shut Down Eagles Flight Plans

Sports

After a 16-2 win over the Mount Bethel Eagles on Monday, the Tigers traveled to Marietta looking to sweep the quick two-game series over the non-region opponent.

After the dominating performance from the Tigers on Monday, it would be hard pressed for a team to play better on Wednesday and yet that happened.  The expectations were not only met but exceeded as the Tigers came out in the top of the first and put up 7 runs to take the lead and never look back.  Stepping to the plate first as the visiting team, the wings of the Mount Bethel Eagles were clipped early and often as Dawson scored in what seemed at will.  Sapp started things off with a screaming double to right field and set the table for the guys behind him.  Allen was hit by a pitch to put runners on 1st and 2nd as Lewis took his place in the batter’s box.  The Tigers scored the first 2 of 7 on a Lewis single before anyone could blink.   Hits by Hernandez, Mullinax, Rucker and the second hit for Sapp in the inning plated 5 more and had the Tigers firmly in control heading into the bottom half of inning number one.  Taking a quick breather, Dawson went scoreless through inning 2 but picked right back up in the third to leave no doubts to their readiness to walk away with the victory.  On 5 walks, 1 HBP, 7 singles, 1 double and Sapp Grand Slam, the visiting Tigers ended any chance of the Eagles taking flight.  The 13 run third set the score at 20-0 and would be the final score in the mercy rule game.

Defensively both teams played errorless ball but the obvious difference was the pitching of the Dawson Tigers.  C. Moore and G. Gutierrez combined for the 1 hit shutout.  Moore started the game and went 2 innings on 17 pitches(15 were strikes) with no hits, no runs, and 2 strikeouts.  Gutierrez came in to close out the game and had 1 walk, 1 hit, and 1 strikeout in 1 inning of work for the Tigers.  These two Tiger hurlers could not be touched.

The Tigers will cleat up at North Hall on Monday the 4th with a start time of 5:55 PM.

Lady Tigers Fall By Three To Indians

Sports, Team FYN Sports

The Lady Tigers of Dawson County (4-9 over all and 2-5 in region) hosted the Indians of Lumpkin County (12-3 over all and 4-1 in region) on Tuesday for a region game.  Facing a good team in the Indians the Lady Tigers were almost desperate for a victory.

The first inning had both the Indians and the Lady Tigers putting up one run in their half inning respectively.  The Dawson run came by way of a Carol Drake single and stolen base.  Drake would score on a ground ball out by Maggie Schandera.  The third inning would tell the story of the game with the Indians scoring 3 times and taking the lead that would give them the victory.  The Indians added 2 insurance runs in the fifth and another in the sixth for a 7-4 region win.  The Lady Tigers fought adding 2 in the forth and one in the sixth but came up just 3 runs short in the loss.

Dawson hitters had 7 hits in the game facing a strong pitcher in Natalie Robinson.  Robinson threw 89 pitches allowing 4 runs(1 earned) on 7 hits, 2 strikeouts and 3 walks.  Providing the offense for Dawson were Carol Drake, Brandi Williams, Maggie Schandera and Tori Martin each with one hit.  Olivia Martinez had 3 hits in the game.   Maggie Schandera stepped in the circle for the Lady Cats going all 7 innings. Schandera took the loss throwing 91 pitches allowing 7 runs with 3 of those earned, 8 hits, 2 strikeouts and 1 walk.  75 of her 91 pitches were strikes.

With this 7-4 loss, Dawson heads into their home game against region opponent Greater Atlanta Christian on Thursday September 13, 2018.  Game time is set for a 5:55 PM first pitch.

Dawson Tigers drop close contest against West Hall; Turn attention to White County

Sports, Team FYN Sports

The Dawson County Tigers are one possession away from a perfect season. Last Friday, September 15, West Hall, a 4A-Region 7 favorite, managed to hand the Tigers their first loss of the season, but it wasn’t easy. At the end of the first quarter Dawson held a 7-3 lead, but their early touchdown would be the only time the offense found paydirt for the rest of the night.

West Hall scored a touchdown before the half, and both defenses came out swinging for the fences in the third; holding each other scoreless for 15

minutes. The Tigers kicked a field goal in the fourth, forcing a tie; but West Hall’s kicker had enough leg and accuracy to put it away for the Spartans, 13-10.

Now 2-1 overall, with a 29-14 win over Chattooga (Summerville, GA) and a 9-0 skunking of 7A-Region 5’s Forsyth Central (Cumming, GA); the Tigers turn their attention to 4A-Region 7 White County (4-1), who is coming off a big 28-18 win over a very talented North Hall squad (3A Region 7). The last time these two teams met on the gridiron, the Tigers took the Warriors to the woodshed, winning 46-0. This year’s contest will most likely be much more competitive as both teams bring solid talent and experience on both sides of the football.

Kickoff is scheduled for 7:30pm in Cleveland, Ga.

JV Dawson Tigers Capture Mountain League Championship

DCHS Baseball, Sports, Team FYN Sports

The junior varsity Dawson County High School Tigers have laid claim to the 2016 Mountain League championship, after winning a tournament at Gilmer High School last Friday and Saturday.

Dawson toppled Lumpkin 10-0 and the number-one seeded Pickens Dragons 5-2 to advance to the championship game against the number-three seeded White County Warriors.

The Tigers and Warriors quickly found themselves immersed in a pitching duel. Dawson finally broke through in the top of the third, when Nate Sorrells drew a leadoff walk and later scored with two outs after Zach Prichard singled off Warriors starter Jace Johnson. A groundout prevented Dawson from extending its lead.

The duel pressed on, with the Tigers adding a bit of insurance in the top of the seventh. Hudson Sapp and Sorrells both singled to begin the frame, with Sapp scoring on an error to give DCHS a 2-0 advantage. White County reliever Trevor Morgan managed to get out of the jam by recording a strikeout and inducing two groundouts.

The Warriors provided some late-inning drama in the bottom of the seventh. Just one out away from losing the championship game, a pair of singles paid dividends as Johnson doubled off Sorrells to tie the game, 2-2. Johnson was then caught stealing, to send the game into extra innings.

Dawson wasted little time reclaiming the lead in the eighth. Hunter Barron singled to start the inning, then later scored with one out after Wyatt Haase garnered a hit. A strikeout and groundout kept the Tigers from adding to the advantage.

White County got two runners on base with one out in the bottom portion of the eighth, but were unable to get a runner across the plate, giving Dawson the victory and the 2016 JV Mountain League championship.

“It’s amazing for us to come through like we did,” said Dawson JV coach Logan Allen after the tournament. “We played a great game yesterday and we came here today and got two wins. We had great pitching performances from Hudson Sapp, Nate Sorrells and then I brought in Austin Nix in and he did fine. Then, I brought in Hunter Barron and he had runners on first and third with one out and he kept them from scoring. It was just an amazing team effort. We started out a little slow this season, but we got better and better as the season went on. I knew it was building to this tournament. I knew as a team we were good enough (to win the championship), if we could put it together at the right time.”
