Mabel A. Goodrich, 95, of Doraville, GA passed away Tuesday January 14, 2020.
Born September 24, 1924 in Danby, Vermont to the late Harry and Marie Tinney, she had lived in Doraville for the past 20 years. Mabel formerly owned a restaurant in Weippe, Idaho, she worked as a caregiver, and did whatever was needed to support her family. She was very giving, kind hearted and was devoted to her family and friends. Mrs. Goodrich possessed many talents and had traveled to 49 states, Canada and Europe. She was also preceded in death by her husbands, Cecil “Bugger” Stevens and Donald Goodrich; sons, Cecil Stevens, Thomas Stevens; daughter, Betty Goodrich; 3 grandchildren; son in law, Clyde Colvin; sisters, Phyllis Jurnak, Frances Poore, Betty Jane Goodrich, Blanche “Jonny” Miller, and Barbara Tinney.
Surviving are her children, Peter and Karen Stevens, Doraville, GA, Raymond and Suzie Stevens, Middletown Springs, VT, Walter “Dickie” and Gail Stevens, Douglasville, GA, Deloris “Cookie” and Scott MacEllven, Summerville, FL, Cecille “Cele” Colvin, Danby, VT, Frances “Franny” and Dolphus Crow, Norcross, GA, Mary and James Pratt, Dawsonville, GA; 23 grandchildren, 40 great grandchildren, and 20 great great grandchildren.
A funeral mass will be held Monday January 20, 2020 at 11 o’clock at Christ the Redeemer Catholic Church. Fr. Brian Higgins will officiate. Mrs. Goodrich will be taken to Vermont for interment in St. Jeromes Cemetery at a later date.
The family will receive friends Sunday from 3 until 6 at the funeral home.

Joe Slaton, 85, of Dawsonville passed away Wednesday January 8, 2020 at St. Joseph’s Hospital.
Born December 5, 1934 in Dawson County to the late Jewell and Annabelle Slaton, he lived a number of years in Marietta before returning to Dawson County 25 years ago. Mr. Slaton retired from Lockheed-Martin after over 30 years of service. He has been a member of the International Association of Machinist and Aerospace Workers for 57 years. Joe enjoyed gardening, fishing, was a NASCAR fan and enjoyed music. He was also preceded in death by his wife of 58 years, Lillian Rita Slaton.
Surviving are his son and daughter in law, Joseph “Joey” and Pam Slaton, Dallas, GA; grandchildren, Brad Slaton, Tiffany Slaton; great grandchildren, Bennett Slaton, Carter Slaton; sister and brother in law, Louise and Wayne Garrett, Gainesville; brother and sister in law, Glenn and Diane Slaton, Kennesaw; and a number of other relatives.
Funeral services will be held Sunday January 12, 2020 at 4 o’clock at Bearden Funeral Home Chapel. Rev. Tim Biddy will officiate. Interment will follow in Dawsonville Memorial Gardens.
The family will receive friends Saturday from 3 until 7 at the funeral home.

Betty Jo Arrendale, 86, of Dawsonville passed away Wednesday January 8, 2020 at Seasons Hospice following a period of declining health.

Born November 14, 1933, Betty Jo was a lifelong resident of Dawson County. A graduate of Dawson County High School, she worked as a secretary at Sweet Orr for many years and was also a skilled seamstress who enjoyed making baby blankets for her family and friends. A dedicated member of Juno Baptist Church, Betty Jo was a loving wife, mother, sister and grandmother who was extremely dedicated to her grandchildren. She was also preceded in death by her husband, Joe J. Arrendale; parents, Joseph Monroe and Dosha Mae Burt; sister, Shirley Jean Cofield; brothers, Sam Burt and Merlin Burt.

Betty Jo was a woman who took care of things – especially the people she loved. She was a loyal friend, a hard worker, and a generous giver. Betty was reliable, precise, and thorough. She was someone you could depend on. No one kept a cleaner home!

Betty enjoyed making homemade biscuits, shopping at Belk, and attending every service Juno Baptist Church offered. Betty loved books on tape, gospel music, and mint chewing gum. But most of all, Betty loved God and her family.

Betty’s determination, resilience, and – yes – stubbornness,made her an invaluable source of wisdom to all those who surrounded her.

As her family, we rejoice – knowing assuredly that she is reunited with her heavenly Father and her beloved husband, Joe.

Surviving are her daughter and son in law, Jennifer and Brian Bartlett, Cumming; son and daughter in law, Rick and Deborah Arrendale, Graslake, IL; grandchildren, Allison and Matt Reis, Joseph Arrendale, Jessica and Tommy Brock, Taylor Watson, Holly Crawshaw, Cole Watson; great-grandchildren, Noah, Daniel, Jonah, and Harley Grace Brock, Lilah, Esmae and Sailor Crawshaw; sisters, Maude Harben, Dawsonville, Vaudell Stephens, Dawsonville, Dora Arrendale, Dahlonega; brother and sister in law, J.M. and Marie Burt, Alpharetta.

A celebration of life will be held Sunday January 12, 2020 at 2 p.m. at Bearden Funeral Home Chapel. Rev. Dennis Bottoms will officiate. Interment will follow in Juno Baptist Church Cemetery.

The family will receive friends at the funeral home from 1 p.m. until the hour of service on Sunday.

Kenneth Eugene Layman, 52, of Dawsonville passed away Monday, January 6th, 2020. Kenny was born April 6th, 1967 in Mt. Gilead, Ohio.

He is survived by his wife, Karen Layman; his son, Derek Layman; his daughter, Sierra Eliopulos; his son, Steven Slaton; his daughter, Lauren Ciccarelli; his grandchildren, Scarlett Slaton, Alistair Slaton, Jack Ciccarelli and Luca Ciccarelli; his parents, Clinton Bunnell and Annette Bunnell; mother-in-law Mary Lisenby; sisters Sherri Poole, Leslie Schneider and Kimberly Broxton; brothers Jeremy Layman and Chris Layman; sisters Lisa Michelle Layman and Nicole Layman-Kern.

A memorial service for friends and family will be held Saturday, January 11th, 2PM at Sweetwater Baptist Church, 189 Sweetwater Church Rd, Dawsonville, Georgia 30534. Flowers may be sent to Sweetwater Baptist Church.

Russell Fields, 87, of Dawsonville passed away Monday January 6, 2020 at Northside Forsyth Hospital.
Born July 18, 1932 in Brookhaven, Georgia to the late Arthur and Lola Fields, he had had lived in Dawson County for the past 35 years having moved from Port Orange, Florida. Mr. Fields was a retired brick and rock mason. He was an avid fisherman and hunter but also enjoyed NASCAR and the Atlanta Braves. He was also preceded in death by his brothers, Max Fields and Harold Fields.
Surviving are his wife of 43 years, Heidi Fields, Dawsonville; children, David Fields, Dawsonville, Rusty Fields, Buford, Judy Fields, Marietta, Rick Fields, Buford, Beth Hartley, Flowery Branch, Jennifer and Eric Burgess, Dawsonville; 10 grandchildren; several great grandchildren and great great grandchildren; sister, Faye Pritchett, Dawsonville; and a number of other relatives.
Graveside services will be held Wednesday January 8, 2020 at 1 o’clock at Arlington Memorial Park. Rev. Chris Pritchett will officiate.
The family will receive friends Tuesday from 3 until 8 at the funeral home.

V. Joan Conrad, 88, of Gainesville passed away Thursday, January 2, 2020 at Bell Minor Home following a period of declining health.

Joan was born on July 10, 1931 to the late Robert and Blanche Matthews. After living in Pennsylvania, Maryland, and South Carolina, she moved to Gainesville in 2012. A graduate of Villanova University, she held an Education Specialist degree. Joan was a lifelong educator who had taught grades K-8, and served as a school principal. She retired from teaching professionally in 1996. She enjoyed crafting and was excellent at sewing and crocheting. She also volunteered for many years at The South Carolina Railroad Museum as a docent. An infant son, W. Andrew Conrad, also precedes her in death.

Surviving are son and daughter-in-law, Matthew and Heather Conrad of Clermont, GA; brother and sister-in-law, Robert and Marilyn Matthews of Secane, PA; grandsons, Will, and Jared; granddaughters, Jordan and Kristy; and special caretaker, Clara O’Neil.

The family is planning memorial services for a later date.

Linda Jones, 65, of Dawsonville passed away Thursday January 9, 2020 at Northeast Georgia Medical Center following a period of declining health.
Born April 17, 1954 in Norfolk, Virginia, she had lived in Dawson County most of her life. Linda was a homemaker who was extremely devoted to her family and was loved by all who knew her. She constantly put others before herself. She enjoyed cooking, knitting, and was preceded in death by her mother and stepfather, Johnnie and Dennis Gill.
Surviving are her husband of 37 years, Ronald “Runt” Jones, Dawsonville; children, Tony Jones, Sheryl Jones, Vickie Jones, Shelby Jones, Dennis and Karlee Jones, all of Dawsonville; grandchildren, Cole, Leah-Shea, Trenton, Jameson, Levi and Sophie.
The family will receive friends Saturday from 3 until 7 at the funeral home.
