Mary M. Maher, 73, of Dawsonville passed away Thursday July 26, 2018 at her residence following a period of declining health.

Born June 11, 1945 in New York, Mary had been a resident of Dawson County for over 30 years coming from Atlanta. She was raised in LaGrange, Georgia where she was a graduate of LaGrange High School and attended LaGrange College. After many years of being a homemaker, Mary went to work for the Dawson County School System where she was a beloved cashier in the lunchroom of Robinson Elementary and later Blacks Mill Elementary. A loving and devoted mother and grandmother, Mary was an active member of Bethel United Methodist Church and their UMW group. She was preceded in death by her husband, Mike Maher and parents, Davis and Irene Melson.

Surviving are her children, Allyson and Angela Shaffer of Tucker, Chris Maher of Dawsonville, Byron and Kelley Shaffer of Loganville, Jeff and Deana Maher of Cumming, Angie and Bryan Chester of Dawsonville, Matt “Sam” Maher and Slade Sohmer of New York; grandchildren, Kelsey Maher, Jamie Shaffer, Savannah and Matt Fox, Carrie Maher, Rachel Shaffer, Anna Maher, Emily Shaffer.
The family is planning memorial services to be held at a later date.

Katherine Margaret (Kay) Somerville, 99, of Dawsonville, died July 21, 2018. Kay was born on December 1, 1918, in Younkers, New York, to Ruloff and Lorette Both. At an early age, she moved with her family to Carmel, New York, where she attended Carmel Central School. Upon graduating, she moved to New York City, working at the 1938 World’s Fair. It was there that she met and married William Somerville, her husband until his death fifty-three years later. During the years she lived in New York City, Carmel, New York, and Cape Cod, Massachusetts, she worked as a secretary, and managed a movie theater. Upon her husband’s death, she moved to Cadiz, Kentucky, to be near her son. While there, she volunteered at the local hospital and was active in the community. Finally, she moved with her family to Dawsonville, Ga., where she was a regular at the Senior Center until suffering a stroke. Kay didn’t speak ill of anyone, enjoyed life, had a great wit, and was loved by almost everyone who knew her. She is survived by her son and daughter-in-law, William and Jackie Somerville, four grandchildren, nine great-grandchildren, and one great-great-grandchild. Glenn Wesley Greenway, 45, of Dawsonville passed away Friday July 13, 2018.
Born May 4, 1973, he lived most of his life in the Lumpkin and Dawson County area. Mr. Greenway worked as a crane operator for Atlanta Classic Tree Service. He loved Harley Davidson motorcycles and was a member of the Heaven Saints Motorcycle Ministry and was active in the Brothers Keepers Ministry. A member of Set Free Baptist Church, he was preceded in death by his stepfather, Joe Conowal.

Surviving are his sons and daughter in law, Gabriel and Paige Greenway, Moore, Oklahoma, Caleb Greenway, Ellijay; granddaughter, Everley Greenway; mother, Linda Tinsley and her husband, Dennis Molnar, Navarre, FL; sisters and brothers in law, Mary and Chuck Whitmire, Dahlonega, Helen and Todd Daniels, Erie, Pennsylvania; brothers and sisters in law, Michael and Sandy Greenway, Dawsonville, Chris and Teresa Conowal, Dawsonville, Joseph Conowal, Gainesville; aunt, Brondell Greenway, Dahlonega; and a number of other relatives.

Funeral services will be held Tuesday July 17, 2018 at 11 o’clock at Bearden Funeral Home Chapel. Interment will follow in the Tinsley Chapel Cemetery.

Norman Henderson “Norm” Donald, III, 80, of Dawsonville, GA, formerly of New York, passed away peacefully at his home on July 11, 2018.

Norm was born November 1, 1937 in Denver, CO to the late Norman H. Jr. and Angelene Donald. He was a graduate of St. Paul’s School in New Hampshire, Princeton University and Harvard University Law School. After graduation, he worked at Davis Polk & Wardell, LLP before joining Skadden, Arps, Meagher, Slate & Flom, LLP where he was a partner specializing in mergers & acquisitions for decades. A member of the Union Club in New York and Rotary International, he was an active member of the Dawsonville Community. He enjoyed international travels, golf, and reading. Norm was also preceded in death by a son, Norman H. Donald, IV; and sister, Annette Donald.

He is survived by his daughter and son in law, Helen and Silas W. Smith, New York, NY; two grandchildren Addison and Alston Smith; and his brother Williamson Pell Donald.

A pot luck memorial gathering will be held Saturday July 14, 2018 from 12 noon until 2 p.m. in the Fellowship Hall at Church of the Apostles, 34 Grant Road West, Dawsonville, GA 30534.

Lola Marie Pugh, 81, of Dawsonville, GA passed away on Monday, May 22, 2018 at Tanglewood Assisted Living, Dawsonville, GA, after an extended illness. She was born to the late Junia and Lillie Belle Chastain. She was raised in Gainesville, GA where she graduated as an honor graduate from Gainesville High School in 1954. She retired from Liberty Mutual Insurance Company. She was a member of Liberty Baptist Church, Dawsonville, GA where she was a Sunday school teacher and Deacons wife for many years. Lola will be remembered for her caring heart and beautiful smile.
She is preceded in death by her husband, Charles Thomas Pugh; brother, Paul Chastain; and all of Charlie’s brothers and sisters and their spouses.

She is survived by her children, Connie and Rick Wiggins of Dawsonville, GA; Donna and Jerry Thompson of Canton, GA, Kay Pugh of Dawsonville, GA; grandchildren, Candi and Justin, Jennifer and Jon, Jana and Daniel, Daniel and Kendra, Kaleb, Cooper; great grandchildren, Madison, Carsen, Lillie, Lola, Adaline, Ava, Corbin, Coleman and Kinley; brothers, Ray and Linda Chastain, David and Sheila Chastain; sister, Sarah and Larry Chapman; and special friend Frank McCurdy and numerous other relatives.

Funeral services will be held on Friday, May 25, 2018 at 1:00 p.m. at Liberty Baptist Church, Dawsonville, GA with the Reverends, Dennis Bottoms, Jerry Fraizer, Stephen Davis, and Cory Gilleland officiating. Interment will follow the service at the church cemetery.

Frank E. Manning, 72, of Dawsonville passed away Thursday April 26, 2018 at his residence following a period of declining health.

Born January 19, 1946, Mr. Manning had been a resident of Dawsonville for over 25 years. A loving husband, father and friend, he was a man of God and a rock for his family. Frank retired from General Motors after 30 years of service and served as a deacon at Trinity Baptist Church in Dawsonville. He is preceded in death by his wife, Sylvia “Annette” Manning, son, Jeffrey Scott Manning, parents, Frank Manning and Dimple Manning Carter, sister, Patsy Kidd and brother, Hoyt Manning.

Surviving are his daughter and son in law, Jennifer and Jon Spangler of Braselton; daughter in law, Debbie Manning of Worton, MD, grandchildren, Keith French, Ryan Manning, Jack Manning, Kristin French and Jensen Brock, Katie French, Skylar Spangler; brother, David Manning of Forsyth; sisters in law and brothers in law, Victoria and Steve Brumbelow of Dawsonville, Susan and Joe Chadwick of Snellville, Angela Manning of Jonesboro; other relatives.

Brindia Lorene Ray, 75, of Dawsonville passed away Monday March 26, 2018 at her residence following a period of declining health.

Born March 1, 1943 in Mt. Olive, Alabama to the late Hiram and Alice Wicks, she had lived in Dawson County for the past 29 years having moved from Lumpkin County. Brindia was employed by Owens Farms, Inc. for 30 years after which she worked several years as a caregiver. She enjoyed art and loved to crotchet. She was also preceded in death by her husband of 50 years, James Lee Ray; daughter, Anita Prichard; son, Mark Ray; two sisters and four brothers.

Surviving are her sons and daughter in law, James Timothy Ray, Dawsonville, Lucas and Celina Ray, Dawsonville; 9 grandchildren, 9 great grandchildren; son in law, Tim Prichard, Dawsonville; sister in law, Frances Bruce Ray, Dawsonville; and a number of other relatives.
Funeral services will be held Thursday March 29, 2018 at 2 o’clock at Bearden Funeral Home Chapel. Rev. Darren Sams will officiate. Interment will follow in the Philippi Baptist Church Cemetery in Lumpkin County.

Brian Rider, 34, of San Antonio, Texas passed away Monday March 19, 2018 at his residence following a sudden illness.

Brian was born on December 7, 1983 in Landstuhl, Germany. He is a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints and attended the Bulverde Ward in San Antonio. He graduated from Randolph High School in 2002 and attended STVT technical school in San Antonio where he studied welding. He spent some time in Puerto Rico working for FEMA helping with relief efforts for Hurricane Harvey. He was currently working as a security guard. Brian enjoyed working on his car and spending time with his dog Snoopy. He really enjoyed serving and helping others and also spent time working on the church farm and in the Bishop’s Storehouse. Brian is preceded in death by his sisters, Brandy Rider, Sarah Rider and grandparents, Werner Ihde, Horace Rider and Lorene Barnes.
Surviving are his father and step-mother, Ricky and Norma Rider, San Antonio; mother and step-father, Margrit and Michael Dupe, Ft. Walton Beach, Florida; daughter, Brandy Rider; siblings, Mallory Rider and Dylan Rider, both of San Antonio; grandmother, Inga Ihde, St. Simons Island, Georgia; numerous aunts, uncles, cousins and other relatives.

Funeral services will be held Wednesday March 28, 2018 at 11 a.m. at Bearden Funeral Home Chapel. Bishop Michael Wall will officiate. Interment will follow in Dahlonega Memorial Park Cemetery.

Hazel Smith Wallace, 87, of Dawsonville passed away Tuesday March 13, 2018 following a period of declining health.
Born December 18, 1930 in Forsyth County to the late Rufus and Estelle Smith, she lived most of her life in Dawson County. Hazel was a homemaker who enjoyed sewing, gardening and quilting. She was of the Baptist faith. Also preceding her in death were her husband of 68 years, Clayton Stowers Wallace; daughter, Eleanor Wallace Swafford, and two sisters.
Surviving are her son in law, Gerald Swafford, Dawsonville; grandchildren, Beth and Brent Covington, Dawsonville; sister in law, Grace Pirkle, Dawsonville; and a number of other relatives.
Funeral services will be held Thursday March 15, 2018 at 11 o’clock at Bearden Funeral Home Chapel. Rev. Jason Hamby and Rev. Stephen Davis will officiate. Interment will follow in the Harmony Baptist Church Cemetery.

David Burson, 47, of Lumpkin County passed away at his home on Sunday March 10, 2018.
David was a professional commercial roofer, a fan of NASCAR, the Georgia Bulldogs, the Atlanta Falcons, and he enjoyed skydiving, floating on the river, and the NRA. (He was always pushing the limits.) He lays behind a legacy of being kind, loving, and respectful to his beautiful wife (his baby) and his son David always honored his mom and dad. David showed love and respect to all his brothers and sisters. He was the Tickle Monster to a host of nieces and nephews.
David was preceded in death by Larry McKinney Burson.
Surviving David are his wife, Melissa and son, Adam, of Lumpkin County, mom and dad, Donald and Elizabeth Holland, of Dawson County; sister Jenny Burson, of Lumpkin County; brother, Doug Burson of Lumpkin County; brother and sister; Bo and Bonnie Holland, of Dawson County; brother and sister, Dustin and Dana Holland, of Dawson County; brother and sister, Dano and Katherine Holland, of Dawson County; brother and sister in law, Kelly and Lynn Bryant, of Fayetteville; sister in law, Robin Kelley, of Ball Ground and a number of aunts, uncles and cousins from North Georgia.
