DAWSONVILLE, Ga. — Much of Tuesday’s school board meeting was dedicated to recognizing the contributions and accomplishments of the students and staff of the Dawson County School System.

Dawson County School Superintendent Dr. Damon Gibbs reserved one of the most glowing tributes until the end of the meeting.

“We did a monthly report on school nurses,” he began. “Our school nurses saw over 5,000 students in October. That is astounding. I think an even more astounding number is that only five percent of the students went home. Our school nurses do a wonderful job. I don’t think we can say that enough. They administered nearly 1,000 prescribed medications to our students and performed almost 700 diabetic nursing services in October.”

The Board recognized the transportation employees for delivering students to and from school safely 180 days a year.

Dawson County Middle School girls cross country team recorded six first-place finishes and finished fifth in the state in region AAA and AAAA.

The Dawson County High School Boys cross country team was the runner-up in Region 7AAA and the junior varsity won the region title. Collin Kilgore was named to the All-State Team.

Dawson County Girls cross country team

The Dawson County High School Girls Cross Country team won the Region 7AAA junior varsity championship and finished third in Region 7AAA varsity competition. Evion Reinhardt was named to the All-Region Team.

The Dawson County High School volleyball team finished as runner-up in Region 7AAA for the first time and made the Elite 8, marking their third consecutive appearance in the state playoffs.

The Board approved an overnight trip for students from April 3 through April 8 to Disney’s All-Star Movies Resort in Kissimmee, Fl. Where they participate in the Disney Sings Performing Arts Workshop. This will give them the opportunity to work with a Disney Teaching Artist, learn a variety of musical elements and vocal techniques. The students will record a medley of Disney songs from a film and learn about voice-over and sound effect techniques. The cost per student is $650.

The Board also approved a trip for Dawson County High School cheerleaders to the State Cheer Championship in Columbus, for Aug. 15-16 where they will stay at the Country Inn & Suites. Two chaperones will accompany the cheerleaders.

Under the Consent Agenda, the Board approved:

The quarterly financial report;

Approved an agreement with Dawson County Community Partnership to provide youth health services;

Authorizing the superintendent to sign a sales contract and closing documents for property located at Hwy. 9 North in Dawsonville for an amount not to exceed $60,000;

Authorizing the superintendent to sign a contract to partner with K12 Consultants to maximize the district’s E-rate funding.
