Loretta Cantrell Slaton, 78, of Dawsonville passed away Friday February 28, 2020 at Northeast Georgia Medical Center following a period of declining health.
Mrs. Slaton was born December 29, 1941 to the late Fred and Claudine Cantrell and had been a resident of Dawson County for most of her life. Loretta was raised in Sautee, Georgia and a graduate of Nacoochee High School where she played basketball. Devoted, loving and hard-working, she was one of the best cooks in North Georgia. She was a member of Silver City Baptist Church and a mama to many, not just her family, who made everyone feel loved. Loretta was also preceded in death by her brothers, David Cantrell, Earl Cantrell; brother in law, Wallace Slaton; niece, Lori Slaton.
Surviving are her husband of 58 years, Roger D. Slaton, Dawsonville; children, Barry and Lora Slaton, Dawsonville, Chuck and Frankie Slaton, Gainesville, Julie and Jason Stanfield, Dawsonville; sisters and brothers in law, Jeanie and Buford Kinsey, Cleveland, Carol and Jack Westmoreland, Clarkesville, Eva Nix, Rome, Wilma Dorsey, Cleveland; brother and sisters in law, Ronald and Helen Cantrell, Hiawassee, Barbara Cantrell, Clayton, Eloise Slaton, Austell; grandchildren, Tyler and Maddie Slaton, Riley and Devin Gearhart, Brittan Slaton, Charles “Chaz” Slaton, Mollie Stanfield, Elijah Stanfield, Abby Samples-Slaton; a number of nieces, nephews, cousins and other relatives.
Funeral services will be held Monday March 2, 2020 at 2 p.m. at Silver City Baptist Church. Rev. Brody Hughes, Rev. Russell Burt, Rev. Tim Biddy, Rev. Chris Gilbert, Rev. Stephen Davis and Rev. Scott Sorrells will officiate. Interment will follow in the church cemetery.
The family will receive friends at the funeral home on Saturday February 29 from 5 p.m. until 8 p.m. and on Sunday March 1 from 2 p.m. until 8 p.m.

Edna Willis, 92, of Dawsonville, Georgia passed away Thursday February 26, 2020 at her residence following a period of declining health.
Born June 11, 1927 in Chattanooga, Tennessee to the late Thomas and Ethel Swanson, she had been living in Georgia for the past 10 years having moved from Crystal River, Florida. Edna was one-of-a-kind, a very talented seamstress, true character, and lived a long life. She will be missed by many! She was also preceded in death by her husband, Clyde Willis and several sisters and brothers.
Surviving are her son, Gary D. Allen, Dawsonville, GA; granddaughter, Lindsey M. Sentz, Gainesville, GA; sister, Louise Brown, Ringold, GA; brothers, Kenneth Swanson, Louisiana, George Swanson, Tennessee; and a number of nieces, nephews, and other relatives.
Mrs. Willis will be taken to Crystal River, Florida for services and burial in the Crystal River Memorial Park Cemetery.

Billy R. Roland, 74, of Dawsonville passed away Saturday February 29, 2020 following a period of declining health.
Born February 22, 1946 to the late Earl and Ida Mae Roland, he was a lifelong resident of Dawson County. Billy retired after many years of service with the Georgia Department of Transportation. An extremely devoted husband, he was a friend to everyone who knew him. He enjoyed the outdoors, hunting and having breakfast with his friends at Bojangles. Billy was also preceded in death by his sisters, Nora Neal, Bobbie Duncan, Betty Waters, Lorene Ayers and brothers, Dewey Roland and Jimmy Roland.
Surviving are his wife, Annie Roland of Dawsonville; sister, Jean Bryant of Cumming; sons, Anthony (Debra) Roland, Emmanuel Roland; grandsons, Shawn Roland, Austin Roland; other relatives.
Funeral services will be held Tuesday March 3, 2020 at 1 p.m. at Juno Baptist Church. Rev. Tommy Weldy and Rev. Tim Biddy will officiate. Interment will follow in the church cemetery.
The family will receive friends at the funeral home on Monday March 2 from 4 p.m. until 8 p.m.

Johnnie “Lucy” Maude Combs, 57, of Dawsonville, GA passed away on Monday, February 24, 2020 at her residence. She was born to the late William and Elvie Sue Lancaster. She was an avid bird watcher and loved to watch the Atlanta Falcons play football. She was a loving mother, grandmother and great grandmother.

She is survived by her best friend, Jimbo Seals of Dawsonville, GA; children, William Lee Combs of Wisconsin, Destiny and Adam Clark of Suwanee, GA, Desaray Combs of Braselton, GA, Zack Seals of Dawsonville, GA; brothers and sisters, Brenda, Burt, David, Allen, Ted, Lisa, Robert, Scott; grandchildren, Dianna, Billy, Maxwell, Rowen; great grandson, Daniel; many nieces and nephews and numerous other relatives and friends survive.

Ralph Clayton Holland, 63, of Gainesville passed away Friday February 21, 2020 at his residence following a period of declining health.
Born December 25, 1956 in Lumpkin County to the late Arthur “Ott” and Gladys Holland, he had lived in Forsyth County over 30 years. Mr. Holland formerly owned and operated Amen Septic. He was a jack of all trades and had worked in several other professions. Ralph loved all forms of racing and had raced automobiles, motorcycles and go carts. He enjoyed fishing, camping, boating, and was an avid collector. A member of Antioch Baptist Church, he was also preceded in death by his sisters, Shirley Hughes, Patricia Odell, and Juanita Pierce.
Surviving are his daughter and son in law, Mindy and Matt Jeffords, Cumming; grandchildren, Nolan Jeffords, Riley Jeffords; brothers and sisters in law, Donald and Liz Holland, Dawsonville, Keith and Anitra Holland, Gainesville; the mother of his daughter, Melinda Holland, Cleveland; and a number of other relatives.

Duane Brannon Fant: Obituary

Duane Brannon Fant, 57, of Cartersville, Georgia, passed away from cancer, February 24, 2020. He was a beloved son, brother, and uncle. He is survived by his mother, Hazel Kilgore (Bill); sisters, Dominique Fant and Penny Cornett (Rick); stepson, Isaac (Joel) de la Cruz; five nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his father, Ralph Fant, and by his companion and friend, Lisa Anderson. He had also recently lost his best childhood friend, Rick South.

Duane was a property appraiser for the state of Georgia. In his spare time, he enjoyed hiking in the woods and by lakes and streams with his beloved dogs, Bodhi, Mardi, and Koko. He was an avid reader and student of philosophy, and he loved Atlanta Braves baseball.

There will be no public service, but if you would like to remember Duane in a way that would be meaningful to him, please contribute to your local animal shelter or to the state park system.

Anita Mae Gauss, 90, of Dawsonville passed away Thursday February 20, 2020 at her residence.
Born November 9, 1929 in Marshall, Michigan to the late Starla and Berdine Clute, she had lived in Dawson County for over 40 years having moved from Hialeah, Florida. Mrs. Gauss retired as a Registered Nurse with the Hall County Health Department. A loving wife, mother, and best friend, she was also preceded in death by her husband of 57 years, Robert “Bob” Gauss.
Surviving are her children, Carol Gauss, Dawsonville, Robert, Jr. and Ameli Gauss, Flagler Beach, FL, Tina and Tobin McAfee, Dawsonville; multiple grandchildren and great grandchildren; sister, Alice Townsend, Marshall, Michigan; brother in law, Richard Gauss, Sanford, Florida.
Services for Mrs. Gauss will be held in Marshall, Michigan at a later date.

Charles Robin Ryles, 37, of Dawsonville, GA, formerly of Savannah, passed away at his residence on Sunday, February 16, 2020. Known to his family as “Little Robin”, he was a loving son, fiancé and friend who cheered on the Georgia Bulldogs with gusto, spoiled his pups, Bella and Dawson, cooked gourmet meals for those he loved and relished every opportunity to spend quality time with his family.

Robin is survived by his loving fiancée, Debbie Faith McEwen, of Dawsonville; his adoptive mother, LaRose Ryles of Brunswick (formerly of Savannah); his biological father, Charles Robin Rhodes and wife, Pennie, of Stafford, Virginia; his step-siblings Sheila R. Ford, Susan D. Lingenfelser, and George Thomas Ryles III all of Savannah ; his uncle, James Ross Rhodes, of Brunswick, many cousins and dear friends.

He was preceded in death 6 days prior by his adoptive father, George Thomas Ryles, Jr., who together with LaRose, raised him from the age of 3. He was also very fond of his maternal grandmother, Janie C. Stokes, of Oliver, GA, who passed when he was 14 years old.

Robin was employed with Parmenter, LLC in Atlanta as an engineer at the time of his passing.

A memorial service will be held Saturday, February 22, 2020 at 10 a.m. at First United Methodist Church, 1400 Norwich Street, Brunswick, GA, with The Reverend Doctor Wright Culpepper officiating. The family will receive friends at a reception immediately following the service in the fellowship hall of the church where light appetizers and beverages will be served. Interment will be private.

Bobby Wayne Carter, 81, of Gainesville, GA passed away on Saturday, February 15, 2020 after an extended illness. He was born to the late James and Belvia Carter. He was a member of Harvest Assembly of God, Cleveland, GA. Bobby loved favorite pastime was working on cars. He was a loving father, grandfather and great grandfather.

He is preceded in death by his wife, Margil Louise Carter; son, Steve Carter; daughter, Donna Fawcett; and 13 brothers and sisters.

He is survived by his children, Eleandor Gant of Cumming, GA, John and Marlena Fawcett of Wimauma, FL, Al Fawcett of Cumming, GA, Jake Jacobs of Thompson, GA, Cecil Ramey of Bradenton, FL; 17 grandchildren; 30 great grandchildren; and numerous other relatives survive.

Funeral Services will be held on Thursday, February 20, 2020 at 2:00 p.m. at the Bearden Funeral Home Chapel. Interment will follow the funeral at Sawnee View Memorial Gardens, Cumming, GA.

The family will receive friends on Thursday from 12:00 p.m. until service time at the funeral home.
