Avery Herring is the TeamFYNSports Player of the Week for the Dawson Co. Lady Tigers!

Herring, a 5-foot-9 sophomore guard, had a pair of strong games last week for the sixth-ranked Lady Tigers (12-8, 5-3 Region 7-AAA).

Against region-foe Greater Atlanta Christian (11-9, 7-1) on Tuesday, Jan. 14, Herring scored 11 points, pulled down seven rebounds, and added an assist and a steal in a 70-59 loss in Dawsonville.

On Friday, Jan. 17, Herring had a double-double with a team-high 18 points, 13 rebounds, three steals, and two assists in Dawson Co.’s 67-44 win against Class 4A’s Denmark, also in Dawsonville.

For her efforts, Herring is the TeamFYNSports Player of the Week for the Lady Tigers!

Dawson Co. girls fall to GAC 71-59 at home

The Dawson Co. Lady Tigers (11-8, 5-3 Region 7-3A) lost to the visiting Greater Atlanta Christian Lady Spartans (10-9, 6-1 Region 7-3A) 71-59 on Tuesday night. The Lady Tigers were playing without two starters, Sophia D’Oliveira and Mariah Benson.

Maddie Anglin led the team in scoring with 19 points including three 3-pointers. The Lady Tigers had three other players score in double figures, with Marlie Townley scoring 15 points, Avery Herring scoring 11 points, and Kirklyn Porter scoring 10 points.

The Lady Tigers started the game off strong by jumping out to a 15-4 lead in the first quarter. However, the Lady Spartans responded with a 19-0 run to end the quarter with a 23-15 lead.

Despite a strong start to the second quarter from Dawson Co., the Lady Spartans ended the period on an 8-2 run to extend their lead to double digits. GAC took a 35-24 lead into the half.

The third quarter was a back-and-forth affair, as the teams traded scores. A late 9-2 run from the Lady Spartans allowed them to extend their lead to 54-38 with one period left to play.

The Lady Tigers fought hard in the fourth quarter to close the gap, but it wasn’t enough. A 14-2 run late in the game made the score closer, but Dawson Co. lost 71-59.

Coach Steve Sweat said, “You have to not make turnovers, play good/smart defense, and get the backside rebounds if you want to have a chance of beating them!”

The Dawson Co. Lady Tigers play at home again this Friday at 7pm vs Denmark.

Kirklyn Porter is the TeamFYNSports Player of the Week for the Lady Tigers!

Porter, a 5-foot-9 freshman guard, had two strong games last week as Dawson Co. (11-7, 5-2 Region 7-AAA) split a pair of region games.

On Tuesday, Jan. 7, Porter scored nine points, pulled down two rebounds, and added two assists as the Lady Tigers defeated East Hall (6-12, 2-5) 63-40 in Dawsonville.

Porter then scored 17 points, pulled down six rebounds, and added an assist and a steal in a tough, 54-53 loss to Fannin Co. (13-5, 4-3) in Blue Ridge.

Mariah Benson is the TeamFYNSports Player of the Week for the Dawson Co. Lady Tigers!

Benson, a 5-foot-11 post player, helped lead Dawson Co. (9-6, 3-1 Region 7-AAA) to a big, 61-44, region win against Cherokee Bluff (4-14, 0-6) on Friday, Jan. 3, in Dawsonville.

Benson scored 13 points and pulled down 11 rebounds in the first half alone Friday, and finished the game with a team-high 22 points and 12 rebounds.

The Lady Tigers will play East Hall at 6 p.m., Tuesday, Jan. 7, at home, before traveling to take on Fannin Co. at 7 p.m., Friday, Jan. 10, in Blue Ridge.

Benson has helped put the Lady Tigers into a tie for first place in Region 7-AAA so far this season.

Marlie Townley is the TeamFYNSports Player of the Week for the Lady Tigers!

Townley, a senior post player, had a pair of all-around strong games on offense last week, but she made her biggest mark on the defensive end as Dawson Co. won twice.

The Lady Tigers (8-5, 3-1 Region 7-3A) continue to be ranked in the top 10 and Townley is a big part of why they are there.

In an important region game Tuesday, Dec. 17, Dawson Co. visited Lumpkin Co. (8-5, 2-3) and came away with a 64-51 victory. Townley scored 18, pulled down nine rebounds, and added three assists on offense, but had a game-high four blocks on the defensive end.

Back at home against Oconee Co. on Friday, Dec. 20, the Lady Tigers defeated Oconee Co. (5-5, 1-0 Region 8-4A) 59-43. Townley scored 13 and added five rebounds and two assists on offense and put up another two blocks on defense.

Big third quarter leads to Dawson Co. girls victory against Lumpkin Co.

In matchup of top-10 teams, the Dawson Co. Lady Tigers played against the Lumpkin Co. Lady Indians on Tuesday in Dahlonega. The Lady Tigers walked away with a 64-51 victory.

Senior guard Sophia D’Oliveira led the way with 22 points for Dawson Co. (7-5, 3-1 Region 7-AAA). Another senior for the Lady Tigers, Marlie Townley, was the second-leading scorer with 17 in the game.

Freshmen guard Lexi Pierce led the Lady Indians in scoring with 14 points. Junior guard Isabel Davenport and freshmen post Kate Jackson both had 12 in the game for Lumpkin Co. (7-5, 2-3 Region 7-AAA).

The Lady Tigers struck first by scoring the first eight points of the game. The Lady Indians responded by going on an 8-0 run of their own. The teams traded scores the rest of the quarter, until D’Oliveira hit a long 3-pointer at the buzzer to take a 19-15 lead.

Lumpkin Co. started the second quarter on an 8-2 run to take the lead. Dawson Co. then responded with an 8-2 run of their own to retake their lead. The Lady Indians scored the final 5 points of the half to cut Dawson Co.’s halftime lead to 32-31.

The Lady Indians started off the second half with a pair of free throws. Dawson Co. then took control of the game. Aside from a 3-pointer from Lumpkin late in the quarter, the Lady Tigers scored the final 13 points of the quarter. This gave them a 45-36 lead heading into the final quarter of play.

Lumpkin Co. scored five of the first seven points of the fourth before the Lady Tigers had another big run. An 11-0 run extended the Lady Tiger lead to 58-41. Dawson Co. went on to win the game 64-51.

The Lady Indians will return to action on Friday at Banks County High School at 6 p.m.

The Lady Tigers’ next game will also be Friday. They host Oconee Co. at 5:30 p.m.

Sophia D’Oliveira is the TeamFYNSports Writer’s Player of the Week for the Lady Tigers!

D’Oliveira, the team’s senior point guard, is committed to play for Liberty University and showed some Division-I talent in games against North Hall and White Co. late in the week.

Against North Hall on Friday, Dec. 13, in Dawsonville, D’Oliveira put up a triple-double in the 57-54 win for Dawson Co. (6-5, 2-1 Region 7-AAA).

She scored 10 points to go with 10 rebounds and 11 assists for her overall best game of the season so far.

The following day in the North Georgia High School Showcase, D’Oliveira scored 12 points, had six rebounds, and added two steals in Dawson Co’s 64-56 loss to White Co. in Dawsonville.

Madison Anglin is the TeamFYNSports Writer’s Player of the Week for the Lady Tigers!

Madison Anglin is the TeamFYNSports Writer’s Player of the Week for the Lady Tigers!

Anglin, a 5-foot-6 junior guard, had a slow start to the week but came on strong for Dawson Co. (5-4, 1-1 Region 7-AAA).

Anglin started the week by scoring three points in a 54-49 win against region foe Fannin Co. on Tuesday, Dec. 3, in Dawsonville.

The junior made up for the lack of offensive production against the Lady Rebels by putting up a team-high 21 points in a tough, 54-47 loss to Greater Atlanta Christian on Thursday, Dec. 5, in Norcross.

Anglin rounded out the week by scoring a team-high 22 points, to go along with five rebounds and a steal, in a 60-55 victory against Flowery Branch on Saturday, Dec. 7, in Dawsonville.

For her efforts, Anglin is the TeamFYNSports Writer’s Player of the Week for the Lady Tigers!

 

To be considered for the TeamFYNSports Writer’s Player of the Week, a player must play in all games the team plays during that week and must not have any unsportsmanlike conduct (ejections, etc.). Stats considered for Player of the Week run from Monday through Saturday, with Player of the Week being revealed Sunday each week.

Dawson girls finish third in Raider Classic

The Dawson Co. Lady Tigers proved they might just be worth that top-10 ranking over the Thanksgiving holiday, going 2-1 to finish third in the Raider Classic Thanksgiving Tournament at North Forsyth High in Cumming.

Dawson Co. (3-3) defeated Class 4A’s Madison Co., 69-55, on the opening day of the tournament Saturday, Nov. 23, to earn a place in the winner’s bracket beginning this week.

The Lady Tigers had plenty of trouble with Cherokee from Class 7A in the second round, but a lot of teams have had problems with the Lady Warriors, who went to the state semifinals last season as the Region 4-7A champion. Dawson fell in that game, 61-26, Monday, Nov. 25, setting up a game with Class 7A’s Brookwood in the third-place game.

The Lady Tigers were able to bounce back quickly from the disappointing loss and earn an impressive win, 69-60, to secure third-place and even their season record to 3-3.

Freshman Kirklyn Porter led the Lady Tigers with 17 points, including a pair of 3-pointers at the end of the third quarter to give Dawson a 13-point lead.

Senior Marlie Townley scored 14, junior Mariah Benson put up 13, and sophomore Maddie Anglin scored 12.

Senior point guard Sophia D’Oliveira, who committed to play Division-I basketball for Liberty University last week, scored nine points.

Sophomore Avery Herring rounded out the scoring for Dawson Co. with four points in the win.

Up next for the Lady Tigers is a home game against Fannin Co. (4-0) on Tuesday, Dec.3, to open play in Region 7-AAA.

Tip-off is slated for 6 p.m.

This season, Dawson Co. returned the majority of last year’s team, which placed second in the region with a 9-3 record. The Lady Tigers went on to reach the quarterfinals of the Class AAA state tournament and finished with an overall record of 22-9.

Dawson Co. girls basketball falls to Flowery Branch

Things didn’t go as planned last night, Nov. 19, in Flowery Branch for the Dawson County High girls basketball team.

The Lady Tigers (1-2) couldn’t keep up with the Lady Falcons (3-0) and fell 55-40.

Senior point guard Sophia D’Olivira led the team in scoring with 13 points. She also pulled down four rebounds and added two steals.

Senior post player Marlie Townley hauled in a team-high 15 rebounds. She also scored eight points to go with two steals.

Junior Mariah Benson and freshman Kirklyn Porter each scored eight points for the Lady Tigers. Benson added five rebounds and a steal, while Porter pulled down two rebounds.

Junior guard Madison Anglin added three points and three rebounds for Dawson County.

The Lady Tigers will have the rest of the week to work out the kinks from the loss before taking the court again.

Dawson County will play in the North Forsyth Thanksgiving Tournament beginning Saturday, Nov. 23, in Cumming.

The Lady Tigers will face Madison County (1-1) from Region 6-AAAA in the first round of the tournament. Tip-off for that game is set for 1 p.m. Saturday.

The Lady Tigers of Dawson Co. jumped out to a big lead early but had to fight back late to earn the first Region 7-AAA win of the season against Fannin Co., 54-49, Tuesday, Dec. 3, in Dawsonville.

Dawson Co. (4-3, 1-0) took a 16-8 lead after the first quarter, but the Lady Rebels (4-1, 0-1) came storming back and trailed by just three points, 24-21, heading into halftime.

Fannin Co. continued to push the Lady Tigers in the third quarter and took a 36-35 lead into the fourth.

But Dawson Co. would not be denied in the first home region game of the season, outscoring the visiting Lady Rebels 19-13 in the period to earn the victory.

Senior point guard Sophia D’Oliveira had a team-high 15 points in the win, including eight in the first quarter.

In the pivotal fourth quarter, senior Marlie Townley and junior Mariah Benson took over for the Lady Tigers.

Townley scored eight of her 12 points in the period, while Benson scored four of her nine points.

Kirklyn Porter continued a hot start to her freshman season, scoring eight points in the game, while sophomore Avery Herring added four.

Juniors Madison Anglin and Isabella Henson scored three points each in the win for Dawson Co.

Up next, the Lady Tigers visit Norcross for a game with defending Region 7-AAA champion Greater Atlanta Christian (2-6). That game is set to tip-off at 6 p.m., Friday, Dec. 6.

Marlie Townley had a big week for the Lady Tigers basketball team.

The Dawson Co. girls basketball team went 2-1 this past week in the North Forsyth Thanksgiving Tournament.

In the two wins, the senior post player had big games for the Lady Tigers.

Saturday, Nov. 23, Townley had a double-double with 12 points and 14 rebounds, and eight rebounds in a 69-55 win against Class 4A’s Madison Co.

Townley followed that up by scoring 14, including the free throws in the fourth quarter that iced the game for the Lady Tigers in a 69-60 win against Class 7A’s Brookwood.

The win against Brookwood secured third place for the Lady Tigers (3-3).

For her efforts, Marlie Townley is the TeamFYNSports Writer’s Player of the Week for the Dawson County Lady Tigers.
