Nurses in Dawson County schools “much more than sick visits”
Board of Education, Community, Health November 11, 2020
As the school year progresses, the same COVID-19 precautions continue to remain of high priority. Additionally, there was data presented to the Board of Education beyond COVID-19; detailed information on school nurses.
Vikki Brannon, director of health services, said their focus is parallel to the vision statement of the Georgia Association of School Nurses.
The vision statement is “Georgia School Nurses are prepared leaders who develop and implement a coordinated school health program in every Georgia school to improve the health status and educational outcome of students and staff.”
As a nurse of 16 years, Brannon said she has a lot of experience to ensure Dawson County schools and their nurses are always going above and beyond. Braden said school nurses have a stigma at handing out ice packs and bandages, but they are much more.
“Our nurses are sometimes just looked at as being the sick visits, where we have the coughs and the colds…but they do a lot more than that,” Brannon said.

The Dawson County school nurses see 30-40,000 students a school year – estimating to around 4,000 student visits per month, which is significant data, according to Braden. Out of the 40,000 students, there is only a 4% send home rate.
“Data shows what you do and what you’re good for,” Brannon said.
They are devoted to keep students healthy, according to Braden.
Dawson County school nurses tend to students that have ADHD, psychological or psychiatric disorders and other medical conditions that may require medicine throughout the school day. They are additionally responsible for emergency medicine management.
Braden said – for the application and hiring process for nurses in the county – it is important for school nurses to be prepared for anything. The best experience Braden said to have is go into an emergency room and watch.
“You have to be prepared for anything and everything to walk through your door,” Brannon said. “The moment that we do let our guard down, something happens.”
As for COVID-19 numbers, Braden said since the “pandemic year” began, there has been a total of 308 student cases since the beginning of the year and only two of those quarantined students tested positive.
Superintendent Damon Gibbs said it is important to communicate with students’ parents, percentage wise to make them aware of the positive cases.
“We know our kids learn more when they’re in the building,” Gibbs said. “Our nurses give them some encouragement and getting them back in the classroom is critical.”
4,075 Dawson County voters voted in person last week
News October 19, 2020
DAWSON COUNTY, Ga. – Dawson County is well on its way to setting a record for voting in a presidential election. During the first week of in-person voting, 4,075 Dawson Countians cast their ballot. If the next two weeks are anything like the first, voters should easily shatter the old record of 6,329 set in 2008.
“It was heavy every day last week, really heavy,” Board of Elections and Registrations Director Glenda Ferguson said Monday. “I definitely think this election will be a record breaker.”
There was a minor slow down early last week when the state computers bogged down due to the record-breaking turnout but Ferguson said once that was cleared up, things began to flow smoothly again.
As of noon today (Oct. 19) 299 Dawson County voters voted in person.

Confirmed COVID-19 cases now 3,817
News March 31, 2020
ATLANTA — The number of confirmed cases of COVID-19 rose sharply during the evening as the Georgia Department of Public Health reported 785 cases since 7 p.m. Monday (March 30). Tuesday’s noon report indicates there are 3,817 confirmed cases. 818 people have been hospitalized and 108 have died from the disease.
The number of confirmed cases in Dawson, White and Lumpkin counties also increased over night. Dawson County is now reporting 10 confirmed cases, Lumpkin County 8 and White County 3. But Dave Palmer, public information for the Department of Public Health North District 2, said no deaths have been reported in those counties.
DPH statistics indicate that approximately 21.4 percent of the patients with confirmed cases of COVID-19 required hospitalization and 2.83 percent resulted in death. The DPH advises that trouble breathing, persistent pain or pressure in the chest, new confusion or inability to arouse and bluish lips or face can be emergency signs of COVID. Should those signs appear, DPH recommend you seek medical attention immediately.
To protect yourself from the disease, the DPH recommends:
- Wash your hands often with soap and water for at least 20 seconds especially after you have been in a public place, or after blowing your nose, coughing, or sneezing.
- If soap and water are not readily available, use a hand sanitizer that contains at least 60% alcohol. Cover all surfaces of your hands and rub them together until they feel dry.
- Avoid touching your eyes, nose, and mouth with unwashed hands.
- Avoid close contact with people who are sick.
- Put distance between yourself and other people if COVID-19 is spreading in your community. This is especially important for people who are at higher risk of getting very sick.
Should you develop symptoms of the disease which include (but are not limited to) trouble breathing, persistent pain or pressure in the chest, new confusion or inability to arouse and bluish lips or face can be emergency signs of COVID, the DPH recommends getting medical attention immediately.

Flash Flood Watch in effect in Dawson County

The National Weather Service at Peachtree City has issued a flash flood watch until 1 p.m. today (Thurs., Feb.13)for the following counties: Dawson-Lumpkin-White-Dade-Walker-Catoosa-Whitfield-Murray-Fannin-Gilmer-Union-Towns-Chattooga-Gordon-Pickens-Dawson-Lumpkin-White-Floyd-Bartow-Cherokee-Polk-including the cities of Calhoun, Dahlonega, Cleveland, Rome, and Cartersville. The Flash Flood Watch continues for portions of north central Georgia…northeast Georgia and northwest Georgia…including the following areas…in north central Georgia…Cherokee…Dawson…Fannin…Gilmer… Lumpkin…Pickens and Union. In northeast Georgia…Towns and White. In northwest Georgia…Bartow…Catoosa…Chattooga… Dade…Floyd…Gordon…Murray..Polk…Walker and Whitfield.
* A cold front will move southeast across the forecast area today. This front will bring another round of locally heavy rainfall to much of north Georgia. Rainfall amounts of one to two inches will be possible, with locally higher amounts possible. Soils remain saturated and several rivers, creeks and streams remain near or in flood, so any additional rainfall will only create run off and exacerbate ongoing flooding conditions.
* Flash flooding and minor to moderate flooding of larger creek and rivers is expected. This will close some roads and could flood homes and businesses in flood-prone areas. Along larger creeks and rivers, flooding could last for several days.
PRECAUTIONARY/PREPAREDNESS ACTIONS…
A Flash Flood Watch means that conditions may develop that lead to flash flooding. Flash flooding is a very dangerous situation. You should monitor later forecasts and be prepared to take action should Flash Flood Warnings be issued.
Dawson County feels brunt of winter storm
Community, News February 8, 2020
Dawsonville, Ga. – Dawson County has not been immune to the road problems plaguing our region as a winter weather storm moves through the area.
The Dawson County Sheriff’s Office (DCSO) released a statement to the public: “We ask that you PLEASE resist the urge to take a ride and see the roads. There are multiple accidents at multiple locations and we have all hands on deck trying to get everyone taken care of. PLEASE stay off the roads if at all possible.”
Dawson County Government Facebook page reiterated this message, “Please stay off the roads if you can. Authorities are responding to numerous accidents and other issues this morning in Dawson County related to the snowy weather.”
Many of the roads in the county have become impassable. Among these roads Hwy. 53 west of downtown Dawsonville and Gober Hill at Hwy. 53 are currently closed. The DCSO also notes that Hwy.53 and Hwy. 9 are impassable and Hot Pepper Place to 183 has multiple cars off the road.
Dawson County Fire and Emergency Services released that the Dawson County Public Works crews are out working county roads, however, road conditions have not improved since earlier today. GDOT is working on state roads/hwys.
GDOT is plowing Hwy. 53 from Hwy. 400 towards downtown Dawsonville.
Dawson County Fire and Emergency Services also wants the public to be aware that “if you see an abandoned car on the side of road with caution tape on the mirrors that vehicle has already been checked by Public Safety Personnel” and adds that they will continue to monitor the weather and road conditions and update. Again, they urge people not to drive until the snow passes.
The Dawson County Sheriff’s office would also like the public to know who to call if they are in need of assistance: “As always, call 911 for emergencies and 706-344-3636 for non-emergencies.”
FYN will continue to bring you weather updates throughout the day.
