This Morning #BKP and Dr. Tidman discuss health concern and answer: 1. After my last regular exam, my doctor said the results showed cervical dysplasia. What does that mean? Is it cancer? 2. My allergies have caused my throat to feel inflamed and caused sinus drainage. I have seen a doctor but I am still dealing with a cough a week or so later. Is there anything I can do to help get rid of this cough? 3. Can too little sleep be a cause of weight gain? UNG gets state funds for new campus

News

BLUE RIDGE, Ga. – In a recent interview on FYNTV, Georgia Speaker of the House David Ralston made an announcement regarding the University of North Georgia’s (UNG) Blue Ridge campus.

Ralston confirmed in the interview that the state has set $5.5 million into a line item to establish a new standalone “brick and mortar” building for the university. The budgeted funds are set for construction only, meaning that the university will be responsible for locating and acquiring a spot suitable for the new campus. Once the college purchases the location, they can utilize the state funds for their new building to expand into that new home in Fannin County.

As such, the location of this facility is yet to be determined. According to Campus Director of Blue Ridge for UNG, Sandy Ott, she hopes to begin construction as soon as possible. Ott spoke with FetchYourNews (FYN) about the fund allocation saying, “We are thrilled with the opportunity to expand the Blue Ridge campus. We are so excited for the opportunities for the students in our region. This is going to have an impact, truly.”

Ott noted some of the major capabilities that a standalone campus will allow including expanded course offerings, lab spaces for sciences and core classes, as well as development space to cater to the region’s specific needs. While college officials are still searching for the best location at this time, Ott confirmed that they are still very early in the process and uncertain if the new standalone campus will see them completely leaving their current location just off of 515 at 83 Dunbarton Farm Road.

UNG has been at that location since 2015, offering opportunities such as dual-enrollment courses for high school students, a full-time program for first-time freshmen, courses for adult learners getting started or returning to college, and continued education programs.

With the passing of the state’s budget, this is now set for UNG to utilize when available. Ott assures FYN they are moving quickly to take advantage of the funds to increase their services as soon as possible for students. See more by checking out the announcement at 14 minutes into FYNTV’s video below.

Margaret Williamson announces run for Georgia House of Representatives, District 7.

BLUE RIDGE, Ga. – The 2018 election is already starting to take shape as challengers emerge announcing bids for candidacy against well-known incumbents. The most recent of these announcements comes from Margaret Williamson who intends to face off against Speaker of the Georgia House of Representatives David Ralston.

Ralston was first elected to the Georgia House of Representatives in 2002 and represents House District 7, which includes Fannin County, Gilmer County and a portion of Dawson County. Ralston is the 73rd Speaker of the Georgia House of Representatives, a position he has held since 2010.

Williamson, who resides in Ellijay, made a statement discussing her decision to run:

“For many years I have been involved in political campaigns, on local, state, and national levels. I have actively participated in legislative issues, in support of or in opposition to, learning all the way. Now I intend to use this experience and acquired knowledge to enter into the process as a candidate.”

Already having begun the process of running for the House District 7 seat in the Georgia House of Representatives, Williamson acknowledged in her statement that she has mailed the “Declaration to Accept Campaign Contributions” form to the Georgia State Transparency & Campaign Finance Committee.

After approval of this form, Williamson’s next step will be to complete the qualifying process held in March of this year. The qualifying will officially make Williamson a candidate in the Republican Primary for Georgia State House Representative, District 7.

Williamson concluded her statement by announcing that she is in the process of creating a Facebook page which will contain her position on various issues.

“This decision is the culmination of months of debate and prayer. Please continue praying for both John and me,” Williamson said. “This is an exciting time for me.”

A General Primary Election for both Republicans and Democrats will take place on May 22, 2018. Voter registration deadline for the Primary Election is April 23.

Lady Tigers cruise to victory, Tigers come up short in OT

Dawson County High School, Sports, Team FYN Sports

DAWSON, GA – Saturday, Jan 6, the Dawson County Lady Tigers (9-7, 1-3 Region 7-AAA) hosted the Forsyth Central Lady Bulldogs (7-9, 0-2 Region 5-AAAAAAA) and although this was a non-region contest, the ladies from Dawson County showed up ready to play. This was the second time this season that these to programs met on the hardwood, as Dawson’s varsity girls took a 19-pt victory on the Lady Bulldog’s court on Dec 16.

Not taking their second meeting for granted, Dawson County started the game strong and finished in the same manner, leaving no doubt that the best team won Saturday afternoon.  The final margin?  A whopping 30 points, the biggest loss served to the Lady Bulldogs this season!  Final score: 66-36.

With a dominating 30-pt victory and more than 60-pts on the scoreboard, the Lady Tigers clearly know how to shoot a basketball.  Leading the scoring for the Lady Tigers in her first game back from injury was Kaylee Sticker – with 19 points (including four 3 pointers).  She was followed by Sophia d’Oliveria with 10 points, respectively.

Dawson County head coach Steve Sweat also had plenty to be proud of in the effort of his girls on the defensive side of the basketball, providing a balanced performance of defensive pressure and accurate shooting offensively.

The Lady Tigers will be at home on Tuesday hosting Union County (11-4, 3-1) in what should be an exciting game for Region 7-AAA.  The Lady Panthers are coming off a four game win streak and currently sit tied for second overall in the region (with North Hall).  Tip-off is scheduled for 6pm and you won’t want to miss this one.  Union County has a reputation for traveling well, so if you’re a fan of your Tigers you’ll want to make it a point to get to the game early and cheer for your varsity girls and boys!

On the boys side, the Tigers (12-4 overall, 4-0 Region 7-AAA) took a tough loss to a strong Forsyth Central Bulldogs team 63-57 in overtime.  This was the second consecutive night the Tigers forced overtime against a strong team.  Just one night prior to this matchup, the Tigers took the victory over East Hall in Gainesville, 94-91.

Though head coach Chad Pittman was proud of the effort of his team in this game, the Tigers unfortunately did not appear to have the energy to hold off the Bulldogs in the overtime period.  They fought hard and played well, and despite the loss they showed everyone in attendance why they are the team to beat in Region 7-AAA.

Dawson County was led in scoring by Jeremiah Crumley with 25, followed by Cullen Reed with 22 and Campbell Reed with 7.

The Tigers will hit the hardwoods again Tuesday night at 7:30 when they host Union County (13-2, 3-1), who’s only region loss came by the hands of East Hall (77-61) on Jan 3.

You can QUIT during the Great American Smokeout(R), Nov. 16th

Health

North Georgia – Ready to quit? You can do it for at least one day this Thursday, November 16th during the Great American Smokeout®! Every year on the third Thursday of November, many Georgians join tobacco users across the nation in giving up using tobacco and electronic cigarettes for the entire day during this Great American Smokeout® event, initiated by the American Cancer Society[1]. Quitting for just one day is an important step toward a healthier you, especially if that one day can lead to many more.

Tobacco use is the leading preventable cause of death in the United States and in Georgia. Over 11,500 Georgians die each year from tobacco-related diseases, including cancer and heart disease[2]. Quitting tobacco and eliminating exposure to secondhand smoke are two proven ways to decrease the risk of tobacco related death and disability.

The Georgia Smokefree Air Act[3], passed in 2005, has reduced exposure to secondhand smoke by prohibiting smoking in all enclosed facilities, including buildings owned, leased, or operated by the State or local governing authorities.

Now, it’s your turn to reduce tobacco-related health hazards by quitting the use of tobacco and electronic cigarettes during the Great American Smokeout®.

Here in Georgia, we can help. The Georgia Tobacco Quit Line[4] is a free resource that can help tobacco users reach their goal of quitting. The Georgia Tobacco Quit Line (1-877-270-STOP; Spanish speakers call 1-877-2NO-FUME; TTY: 1-877-777-6534 for the hearing impaired) provides counseling for Georgia tobacco users ages 13 and older. Callers speak with tobacco cessation counselors who help to develop a unique quitting plan for each person.

North Georgia Health District 1-2 of the Georgia Department of Public Health, health departments in Cherokee, Fannin, Gilmer, Murray, Pickens and Whitfield Counites, Drug Free Cherokee, Cherokee Focus, and the Cherokee Youth Council encourage Georgians to go tobacco-free during the Great American Smokeout®, and beyond!

Dawson Takes Revenge on Fannin

Dawson County High School, Sports, Team FYN Sports

On Friday night the Fannin County Rebels hosted the Dawson County Tigers. Last season Fannin beat Dawson by a score of 31-15. Last years game was something that Dawson had in their minds as they began the game. The Tigers came into this game hot, after beating Union County by a score of 57-26. Fannin County had a week to recover after playing Greater Atlanta Christian.

The opening kickoff was squibbed by Fannin and Dawson County took possession at the 35 yard line. On the img_1276first play from scrimmage Tigers QB, Coey Watson, found his receiver, Austin Young, in the middle of the field for a 65 yard touchdown. The Tigers tried to surprise the Rebels by going for two and were stopped short. The Rebels then took control at the 20 on their first possession, the Dawson defense followed Fannin QB, Brad Davis’ eyes, and intercepted the pass around the 30 yard line. The very next play Watson was able to find his man in the end zone. 45 seconds into the game Dawson County had a firm grasp on the game with a 14-0 lead.

The Rebels offense continued to struggle as Senior WR, Cooper Earls had to come out of the game due to injury early in the first quarter. Throughout the first the offense was unable to gain more than a first down, giving Dawson County favorable field position all night. The Tigers would go on to score another passing touchdown and a field goal before the opening quarter ended. At the end of the first the Tigers lead by a score of 24-0.

The revenge minded Tigers continued to take out last years frustrations as the scoring continued in the 2nd img_1346Quarter. Coey Watson continued his arial attack during the remainder of the half leading his team on scoring drives four times in the 2nd, all of which ending in a touchdown, two of which were rushing. Dawson running back Peyton Myers would take the ball in from just a few yards out with under 5 minutes left and then again before halftime. At the half Dawson county was leading by a score of 52-0. Because of the score at the half, the mercy rule was applied, which means the clock continuously runs for the remaineder of the game.

The Rebels had a new face behind center at the beginning of the second half, Junior QB, Tyler Norton came into the game. During his first drive he found his receiver for a couple yards but came up short on 3rd down. Dawson County also made a QB change as Junior, Connor Bearden, stepped in. Neither team was able to move the ball during the 3rd.

During the 4th Quarter the Rebels and Norton were finally able to get into the end zone with about 8 img_1545minutes left in the game, when Jacob Reece took the ball in from two yards out. During the final minute of the game the Tigers fumbled the football near midfield. The Rebels took possession with under 10 seconds left and Norton was able to find an open man down the sideline and scored as the final buzzer sounded. The game ended with Dawson County winning by a score of 52-13.

The Rebels now find themselves at 0-3 in the region. Fannin County has all but been eliminated from playoff contention.

The Tigers find themselves at 3-0 in the region, placing them just behind GAC in the region standings.

Next week the Rebels head to Lumpkin County to take on the 3-4 Indians.
