DCHS football team under fire for pre-game prayer

DAWSONVILLE, Ga. – Dawson County High School’s football team has come under fire from the Freedom From Religion Foundation (FFRF) for allowing a pastor to lead a pre-game locker room prayer.
The FFRF has filed a complaint with the Dawson County School System asking the pastor, Russell Davis of the Etowah Church, be removed from the team and that the school no longer allow religious leaders access to its students.
The complaint states “It is well-settled law that schools cannot appoint or employ a chaplain, seek out a spiritual leader for students or agree to have a volunteer teach other people’s children that character centers on religious belief, because public schools may not advance or promote religion.”
FFRF became aware of Davis and the pre-game prayer after a video was placed on a Facebook page.
Dawson County School Superintendent Dr. Damon Gibbs issued the following statement in response to the complaint.
“The School District became aware on Friday of a letter sent to the attorney for the District by the Freedom from Religion Foundation and apparently also mailed directly to local news media. After reviewing the information provided and conversations with appropriate school officials, the District is committed to following the parameters set forth in the First Amendment, and the court decisions interpreting the First Amendment, relating to both the establishment of religion and student’s rights to exercise their freedom of religion. We believe that our coaches have an understanding of those guidelines and will abide by them.”

Tigers Win Big In Series Finale

The Tigers Of Dawson Co. welcomed the East Hall Vikings to Tiger Field on Friday for the final game of a three game series and looking to get a big region victory. On this Friday night, it was standing room only
as five young men were preparing to take the field as their high school baseball careers are coming to a close. These five Seniors were celebrated for their accomplishments before the game and during the game these guys returned the gratitude to the fans.
Seniors Connor Bearden(3-3 with a 2 run Homerun), Chandler Caine(1-2, a walk, 1 RBI and a run scored), Palmer Sapp(2-4 with 2 runs scored) also took the win for the Tigers, Nathan Sorrells(2 RBI’s on 2 hits,1 walk and scored 2 runs). Easton Wright was 0-2 on the day before leaving with an unknown injury.
The Vikings scored 1 in the first and 6 runs in the fourth to carry a 7-4 lead into the bottom half of the inning. The excitement of Senior night was still in the air as the bottom of the fourth began. Over the 
next two innings, total team effort and participation proved that you can’t give up on your Tigers. The Tigers put 8 runs on the board in the bottom of the fourth and 5 more in the bottom of the fifth to put the GHSA mercy rule in to effect giving them the 17-7 win over the Vikings. The numbers in the game for the Vikings were 7 runs on 9 hits and no errors, Dawson was 17 runs on 15 hits and 1 error.
Next up for the 10-14 Tigers will be a trip to North hall High School for game one of a season ending 3 game set. Start time is penciled in for 5:55 pm on Monday April 16th.
Tigers Take Road Victory Over Indians

The Tigers of Dawson High School made the short trip to Dahlonega on Monday to face the Indians of Lumpkin High School in a region match up. The Tigers, coming in at 7-10 overall and 3-6 in region play, were looking to start strong and finish strong against a good Indian team.
Taking the mound for the Tigers was Chandler Caine, a big framed right hander with an assortment of pitches in his arsenal. Caine went all 7 innings throwing 94 pitches allowing 1 run on 3 hits and 1 walk in the Tiger victory. Behind Caine, the Tigers’ defense was spot on
committing 1 error. At the plate the Tigers offense struck hard putting up 9 hits and 2 walks and plating 3 runs. It looked as if the strategy of the Tigers was to play ABC baseball. Get them on, get them over and get them in worked well with the Tigers hitters putting five sacrifices in the book with 3 of those being sacrifice bunts.
Stand outs for the Tigers at the plate: Palmer Sapp 2-2 with 2 walks, Hunter Barron 2-3 and 2 runs scored.
The Tigers will host the Indians on Wednesday at Dawson High School starting at 5:55 pm.
Second half surge gives Dawson County girls 69-55 win over Madison County

Down 31-28 at the half, the Lady Tigers outscored the Lady Red Raiders 20-9 in the third quarter to take over the game. Dawson went on to win Saturday’s opening game of the North Forsyth Tip-off Tournament 69-55. Maddie Anglin and Sophia D’Oliveira lead the way with 15 points. D’Oliveira nearly had a triple-double, as she also had 9 boards and 8 assists. Marlie Townley also came close to a triple-double as she chipped in 12 points, 14 rebounds and 8 assists. Mariah Benson also had a big game as she put up 14 points and 12 rebounds for the Lady Tigers.

The teams traded baskets throughout the first quarter, with neither team able to gain any separation. At the end of the first quarter, Dawson trailed 19-17.
The second quarter was just as competitive. Dawson went into halftime only down 3 points. Anglin and D’Oliveira each had 8 in the half.
The Lady Tigers opened the second half on a 6-0 run to get the lead back. They also had a 12-0 run late in the third that was halted by a three from Madison County. Dawson took the 48-40 lead into the fourth.

After the teams traded multiple scores to start the final period, the Lady Tigers took over. They sealed the deal with an 8-0 run late in the 4th, as they walked away with a 69-55 win.
The second round of the tournament will take place on Monday at 4 P.M. against Cherokee High School.
Dawson County salutes veterans on Veterans Day

DAWSONVILLE, Ga. — The Dawson County Veterans Administration Office honored veterans and active duty military personnel Monday and they included the county’s fire department and emergency personnel in the festivities.
The all-day event started with a luncheon at Dawson County Junior High. Lunch was served courtesy of the Etowah Water and Sewer Authority.
A large parade led by the Dawson County High School Tigers Pride Marching Band moved out from the junior high at 3 p.m. and proceeded down an American-flag lined Hwy. 9. Ninth District American Legion Commander Thomas Hineline served as Grand Marshal.
U.S. Navy veteran Don Roberson was honored as Veteran of the Year and Marine Corps veteran Ben Overstreet was honored for his service to our nation during World War II.
Other groups who marched or rode to honor veterans included Dawson County High School JROTC and Girl Scout Troop 10618.

DCEMS, DCHS and KARE for Kids team up to provide bright Christmas for underprivileged children

DAWSONVILLE, Ga. – Dawson County emergency services personnel went above and beyond their normal life-saving call of duty Friday, by partnering with KARE for Kids and Dawson County High School’s Community Based Instruction (CBI) program for an annual shopping event that will brighten the Christmas holiday for underprivileged children.
The kids, excited and eager to begin their shopping spree met their sponsors at 10 a.m. inside Walmart before heading off in all directions.
“This event really allows us to focus on teaching the value of volunteering to assist our community,” said Chris Archer, Lieutenant of Fire Prevention.
Shopping with KARE for Kids also provides an opportunity for all three of these groups to continue to grow and to reach the community on multiple levels.
This is the second time Emergency Services and the CBI have teamed up for this event. Last Christmas KARE for Kids provided Christmas to 500 kids.
“Christmas shopping with these children allows us an opportunity to continue to give back to our community,” said Danny Thompson, Fire Chief at Dawson County Emergency Services.
Jeff Bailey, Division Chief Fire Marshal at Dawson County Emergency Services added, “The students in the CBI program are really committed to ensuring they are shopping for what the sponsored child wanted and this is a great opportunity for both of us to learn.”

Dawson County High student charged with terroristic threats

DAWSONVILLE, Ga. –A female student at Dawson County High School was arrested Thursday after she allegedly threatened that she and her boyfriend would “shoot up the school.”
Michelle Lawson, 17, is charged with threatening a crime of violence with the purpose of terrorizing students at the school. She is being held without bond while awaiting her first appearance in court.
There has been an outbreak of threats against schools and students in north Georgia following the tragedy at a Parkland, Florida, high school where 17 people were shot and killed.
On Feb. 16, Hall County deputies removed an unidentified male student from a school bus at gunpoint after someone shouted “he has a gun.” No gun was found, but the student was charged with disorderly conduct. On Feb. 19, a student at Habersham Ninth Grade Academy was arrested for allegedly making terroristic threats. And, on the same day the Dawson County student was arrested, two unidentified male students were charged with making terroristic threats against West Forsyth High School (WFHS).
However, while threats of violence have increased, so has the vigilance of students, parents and school officials.
A fellow student at Dawsonville High reportedly overheard Lawson’s threats and reported it to her parents who notified the Dawson County Sheriff’s Office. The West Forsyth students were reported by the parent of a WFHS student who saw ominous statements on social media and reported them. In the case of the Chestatee High School student in Hall County, it was an alert bus driver who reported a potential threat.
Dawson County Schools Superintendent Damon Gibbs addressed the arrest in an email Thursday evening.
“As always, the safety of our students is our top priority,” Gibbs said. “I want to thank Sheriff (Jeff) Johnson and his staff for acting quickly and handling the situation professionally. The school system will deal with the student per the Code of Conduct to ensure the ongoing safety of our student body.”

Dawson County Coach Lacey Killed in Car Accident

UPDATE FORSYTH COUNTY, Ga. – Dawson County High School Coach Jed Lacey was killed this morning and three others injured in a four-vehicle crash on Ga. 400 just south of Exit 6.
Two of those injured were teenagers who were passengers in Lacey’s Dodge Ram pickup truck. The teenagers are not identified, but have been taken to North Fulton Hospital for treatment.
The accident took place around 6:30 a.m. and the road was closed for nearly four hours.
In addition to coaching the boys’ and girls’ soccer teams, Lacey was an assistant coach on the varsity football team.
Lacey was named by fellow coaches as the Region 7-AAA Girls Coach of the Year earlier this year.
A prayer vigil will be held at the Dawson County High School football field tonight and counselors will be available at the school on Monday.
Dawson County Soccer Coach Dies in Car Wreck

DAWSONVILLE, Ga. – Dawson County Sheriff Jeff Johnson confirmed to Fetch Your News that Dawson County High School soccer Coach Jed Lacey was killed and several others seriously injured this morning in a car wreck in Forsyth County.
FYN is attempting to reach Forsyth County Sheriff Ron Freeman and will have more details as they become available.
In addition to coaching the boys’ and girls’ soccer teams, Lacey was an assistant coach on the varsity football team.

North Hall Outlasts Dawson County in Overtime

GAINESVILLE, Ga. — North Hall outscored Region 7-AAA opponent Dawson County 9-3 in overtime Tuesday to claim a hard fought 60-55 win at the North Hall gym.
Coach Chad Pittman’s Tigers (8-8, 2-2) trailed by as much as 10 points in the first half, but a fourth-quarter rally and layup by Cullen Reed with five seconds left sent the game into overtime.
But Dawson County failed to score a single point in the extra period until Joseph Cronan sank a pair of free throws with 11 seconds left.
North Hall scored only one field goal in the overtime period, but hit 7 of 14 free throws to put the game away.
North Hall led 19-10 after the first period and 29-22 at halftime.
Dawson County took a 43-42 lead on Ryan Gallenkamp’s layup with 5:59 left in the game before the Trojans went on an 8-2 run to lead 50-44 with 42 seconds left.
A Jeremiah Crumley layup, a 3-pointer by Reed and Reed’s layup with 5 seconds left sent the game into overtime.
Reed was the game’s leading scorer with 26 points. Crumley added 14 for the Tigers. Alden Lewallen led North Hall with 14, followed by Evan Easton with 11.
The Tigers will travel to East Hall for another 7-AAA game Friday.
North Hall (10-7, 3-2) defeated Dawson County 55-44 in the girls’ game. The Lady Trojans led 27-15 at intermission. The Lady Tigers rallied in the third quarter to trim the deficit to 37-32 entering the final period.
But the Lady Trojans outscored Dawson County 18-2 in the fourth quarter, hitting 7 of 10 foul shots and getting three 3-point baskets by Sadie Cleveland.
Taylor Anne Kelley led North Hall with 24 points followed by Cleveland with 22.
Abi Chatham and Calli Watson led Dawson County with eight points each.
Blessed Trinity Outlasts Dawson County in Overtime

DAWSONVILLE, Ga. — Ben Sheppard calmly sank a pair of free throws with :07 left to lift Blessed Trinity to a thrilling 54-52 win over host Dawson County in a non-region game Friday night.
Blessed Trinity took the biggest lead of the game at 32-22 late in the third quarter oon Randall Dorvee’s free throw late in the third quarter. But that seemed to light a fire under the Tigers who then went on a 19-9 run to tie the game with 2:57 left in regulation. Coey Watson’s jumper sent it into overtime tied at 45.
The two teams battled back and forth in the four-minute overtime period until Sheppard hit the free throws that turned out to be game winning free throws. The Tigers still had :07 left to change the outcome, but just as he had done in the first half, C.J. Abrams intercepted a desperation pass and iced the game for the Titans.
Abrams dominated the second quarter, picking off five errant Tiger passes and scoring 14 of his team-leading 16 points.
“I thought we overcame all the turnovers in the second half and played with a lot of pride,” Tigers Coach Chad Pittman said. “Hopefully these non-region games will serve as a learning experience. when we open region play.
Crumley was the game’s leading scorer with 18 points.
Dawson County Boys, Girls Teams Beat Lumpkin County

DAWSONVILLE, Ga. — The Dawson County boys and girls basketball teams took twin wins over rival Lumpkin County Tuesday.
The Lady Tigers (2-7, 1-1) placed three players in double figures to roll past the Lady Indians 55-27. Abi Chatham led the way with 20 points, followed by Kaylee Sticker and Cadey Ayers with 12 each.
Dawson County led 21-16 at halftime, and outscored the visitors 15-1 in the third quarter and 19-10 in the fourth to put the game away.
Coach Chad Pittman’s boys had a more difficult time in outlasting a scrappy Indians team 58-55.
Lumpkin County’s Zack Pulley was the game’s leading scorer with 18 points. Dawson County countered with three players scoring in double figures. Freshman Campbell Reed led the Tigers with 12 points, followed by Cullen Reed with 11 and Joseph Cronin with 10.
Campbell Reed scored all his points on four 3-pointers in the second quarter as the Tigers opened up a 39-30 lead at halftime.
Lumpkin County rallied to tie the game at 43-43 on a pair of free throws by Jacob Zarate and again at 48-48 on a 3-pointer by Matthew Hayes with 5:26 left in the game. With 3:50 left, the Tigers held a very shaky 53-51 lead and the Indians were still alive but they never scored again.
It’s Time for the 7AAA Game of the Year: Dawson Co. vs. Greater Atlanta Christian

DAWSONVILLE, Ga. – From Norcross to Dawsonville excitement is building for The Game of the Year in Region 7-AAA: No. 8 Dawson County (7-1, 5-0) vs. No. 1-ranked Greater Atlanta Christian (8-1, 5-0) Friday in Tiger Stadium for the championship.
High school football fans know this clash was inevitable. For weeks, the Tigers and Spartans have bludgeoned their opponents into submission, often scoring in the high 40s and 50s. Both have lost only once and those setbacks were in overtime, early-season games.
On paper, they are as evenly matched as two teams can be.
Dawson County has outscored its opponents by an average of 42-17. GAC has won by an average of 39-13. The Tigers have averaged 213 yards rushing and 185 yards passing per game. GAC averages 191 yards rushing and 180 yards passing.
At the all-important quarterback position, the Spartans are led by Stanford commit Davis Mills, who has passed for 1,331 yards and completed 69 percent of his attempts for a quarterback rating (QBR) of 143.4. The Tigers are led by Coey Watson, the 2015 Player of the Year who has passed for 1,440 yards and completed 60 percent of his passes for a QBR of 118.6.
GAC has the region’s best runner in Kyler McMichael, a 6-2, 195-pound blue-chip athlete who has run for 957 yards and 12 touchdowns. McMichael already has scholarship offers from LSU, Florida, Georgia, Tennessee, Michigan and Michigan State.
Dawson County counters with a stable of solid running backs, led by Watson who has gained 555 yards on the ground, Payton Myers who had 515 yards and nine touchdowns. Taylor Cronan, who has dealt with a nagging shoulder injury all season, still averages 7.7 yards per carry and flashy Nasser Clark, who just transferred from White County.
Defensively, the Tigers have three players averaging double-digit tackles per game. Senior linebacker Luke Martin is scary good with the ability to cover sideline to sideline. Martin averages 15 stops per game, followed by safeties Colin Glover with 12.7 and Jeremy Whalen who averages 10 stops per game and has a team-leading three interceptions.
GACs defense is led by senior safety Davis Markham who averages seven tackles, Devin Thomas (6.3) and linebacker Robby Fowler (5.2).
In a close game, special teams is often the deciding factor. Dawson County has a flat-out game changer in Kolton Brumbelow. The speedy senior, who didn’t play football until this year, has averaged an amazing 83 yards on four kickoff returns, including touchdown runs of 99, 95 and 99 yards.
Both teams have reliable place kickers. Sean Henderson has connected on 31 of 32 extra point attempts and Brooks Buce has converted 10 of 11 and added a 54-yard field goal. The Tigers Cole Dennis has converted 21 of 22 PATs and Payton Allen is perfect on his three extra point attempts.
This is the one everyone has waited for. If you’re planning to go to the game, better get there early. The weather is expected to be perfect, the stands are expected to be filled and Tiger Stadium is expected to be rocking.
Tigers Roll Past Indians 54-8 Face GAC For 7AAA Title Friday

DAWSONVILLE, Ga. — Dawson County (7-1, 5-0) rolled past Lumpkin County 54 to 8 Friday to set up a high-stakes, winner-take-all showdown against No. 1-ranked Greater Atlanta Christian at Tiger Stadium next Friday to for the Region 7-AAA championship.
If the Tigers were looking ahead to the title game, there was no sign of it on the field. Coach Sid Maxwell’s starters dominated the game from the opening kickoff until the game’s final play. Dawson County scored on four of its first five possessions to take a 30-0 lead at the half.
Maxwell said he had some concerns.
“I’ve coached forever and anybody who says they’re not concerned just doesn’t know what may come the next week.”
Payton Myers, who rushed for two touchdowns, scored the first on a 24-yard run barely four minutes into the game and Cole Dennis added the PAT.
The Tigers got the benefit of a short field on their next possession when Drake Samples returned the Indians punt 24 yards to the Lumpkin County 23. Following an illegal procedure penalty, quarterback Coey Watson hit Nick Murphy on a 28-yard scoring strike. A two-point conversion gave the Tigers a 15-0 lead.
Lumpkin County’s second possession ended in disaster when punter Harrison Spivey fumbled the snap in his own end zone and fell on it for a safety to make it 17-0.
White County transfer Nasser Clark gave the Tigers a 23-0 lead when he scored on a 4-yard run to cap a seven play, 40-yard drive. A 7-yard run by Myers closed out the first half scoring.
While the Tigers offense was on a rampage, their defense was strangling the life out of the Indians who had only two first downs and 51 yards of total offense in the first half.
“Our defense held them pretty good,” Maxwell said. “They had 63 points last week (against Fannin County). Our defensive coach and the staff did a great job holding them to hardly anything.”
By the time Lumpkin County could muster any offense at all, Watson had thrown a 44-yard touchdown pass to Kolton Brumbelow, Dennis had added a 23-yard field goal and the Tigers starters had taken a seat.
Cole White scored the Indians only touchdown with 45 seconds left in the third quarter.
Dawson County answered that score in a heartbeat when speedy Kolton Brumbelow took the ensuing kickoff one blade of grass away from his own goal line and streaked 99 yards. It was his third kick return for a touchdown in four weeks. The other two went for 99 and 95 yards respectively.
“Hats off to him,” Maxwell said. “I had to talk the boy into playing football. He’s never played before this year.”

Tigers Rally for 38-24 Win over Vikings

GAINESVILLE, Ga. – After being held to just 3 points in the first half, Dawson County’s usually high-scoring offense erupted for 35 second-half points en route to a 38-24 win over stubborn East Hall Friday.
But on this cold, windy night, it wasn’t the offense that kept the Tigers unbeaten in Region 7-AAA play, it was a determined and opportunistic Tiger defense, that turned in three goal line stands before intermission. Three times the Vikings drove inside the Tigers 10-yard line and each time the door was slammed shut in their faces.
Sophomore Noah Brock set the tone for defense when he intercepted an Austin Parker pass on the Vikings opening possession. Dawson County couldn’t capitalize, however, and Cole Dennis booted a 25-yard field goal.
The Vikings first serious scoring threat followed a Ryan Glass fumble at the Tigers 30. Six plays later they were on the Dawson County 2, facing fourth-and-goal. Cambren Garrison took the handoff up the middle and Luke Martin, Taylor Swafford, Zack Baloga and Blaine Thomason gang tackled him just inches away from the end zone.
On their next possession, the Vikings drove to the Tigers 7 but failed to cross the goal line. On third-and-goal, Swafford tackled Markese Jackson for a five-yard loss and on fourth down, Parker’s pass fell incomplete.
East Hall missed another scoring opportunity as the final seconds of the first half ticked off. The Vikings had a second-and-goal at the Tigers’ 2 but were hit with an illegal procedure penalty and passed incomplete into the end zone as the first half ended.
East Hall opened the second half with a little trickery on an on sides kick. Dawson County recovered at the Vikings 49 and quickly drove the distance with Payton Myers scoring the first of his two touchdowns on a 9-yard run to give the Tigers a 10-0 lead.
But the Vikings answered in a heartbeat on Parker’s 72-yard scoring strike to Sedron Morse.They went for a two-point conversion and got it on Parker’s pass to Tripp Rider.
Moments later, Parker hooked up with Markese Jackson on an 18-yard touchdown and East Hall took a 16-10 lead.
That seemed to be just the spark the Tigers needed as they ran off 27 unanswered points.
Watson scored on a 4-yard run and Dennis added the extra point for a 17-16 lead with 3:52 left in the third quarter. Myers bolted off right tackle for 37 yards and his second touchdown.
Watson scored again on a 1-yard run and Ryan Glass atoned for his fumble by racing 43-yards for the game’s final touchdown.
Dawson County (6-1, 4-0) returns home Friday to face Lumpkin County while East Hall (2-6, 0-4) will visit North Hall.

DAWSONVILLE, Ga. — Friday’s Region 7-AAA game between Dawson County (3-1, 1-0) and Union County at Tiger Stadium promises to be an offensive shootout and a battle between two of the region’s best quarterbacks.
The Panthers (5-1, 1-1) average 41 points per game. The Tigers average 36 points per outing. Union County’s offensive leader is quarterback Cole Wright who leads the team in rushing and passing. Wright averages an amazing 277 yards in total offense per game, 122.5 rushing and 154.5 passing. Junior quarterback Coey Watson leads the Tigers offense with 257 total yards per game, 189.8 passing and 67.3 rushing.
With two prolific offenses squaring off, defense and special teams could dictate the outcome.
The Panthers have allowed opponents to score at a 25 points per game clip. The Tigers have held opponents to 16.3 points per game and had an outstanding goal line stand at North Hall last week.
Wright and his teammates had better account for Luke Martin at all times. The senior linebacker is a game changer, averaging 20 tackles per game. He had a season best 25 stops against North Hall last week. That effort earned him the team’s Player of the Week honors.
