DAWSONVILLE, Ga.  — On November 14, 2019, Dawson County E911 received reports of a possible house fire at 10:51 p.m. on River Overlook Road.

Dawson County Fire units were dispatched at 10:52 p.m. and the first engine company arrived at 10:59 p.m. and found flames through the roof of an approximately 7,000 square foot single-family dwelling. Our personnel mounted an interior attack before transitioning to ladder truck operations.

The fire was declared under control at 12:11 a.m. at which time crews began performing salvage operations of furnishings in the residence. Personnel remained on scene for several more hours locating and extinguishing “hot spots.” The cause does not appear to be suspicious in nature and started as a result of a chimney fire.

Forsyth County Fire responded with an Engine, Ladder, Battalion and Air Light truck to the scene.

Dawson County salutes veterans on Veterans Day

DAWSONVILLE, Ga. — The Dawson County Veterans Administration Office honored veterans and active duty military personnel Monday and they included the county’s fire department and emergency personnel in the festivities.

The all-day event started with a luncheon at Dawson County Junior High. Lunch was served courtesy of the Etowah Water and Sewer Authority.

A large parade led by the Dawson County High School Tigers Pride Marching Band moved out from the junior high at 3 p.m. and proceeded down an American-flag lined Hwy. 9. Ninth District American Legion Commander Thomas Hineline served as Grand Marshal.

U.S. Navy veteran Don Roberson was honored as Veteran of the Year and Marine Corps veteran Ben Overstreet was honored for his service to our nation during World War II.

Other groups who marched or rode to honor veterans included Dawson County High School JROTC and Girl Scout Troop 10618.

Dawson Fire Dept. responds to huge sink hole at AutoZone

DAWSONVILLE, Ga. — At 10:15 a.m., Dawson County E911 received reports of a sink hole at 185 Hwy. 400, the business of AutoZone. Fire units arrived on scene to find a 30-foot by 30-foot sink hole in the front parking lot of AutoZone. Personnel secured the area with barricades. Public Works personnel were on scene to work with business owners on a remediation plan.

There were no injuries or damage reported to the buildings or vehicles. Etowah Water and Sewer Authority is inspecting the area to ensure no water and sewer lines have been comprised. Parking lot will remain closed until repairs have been made.

Monday morning fire damages two Dawson County businesses

DAWSONVILLE, Ga. — At approximately 12:30 a.m. on today (Sept. 23) a passerby called in a fire at a commercial structure behind Sanky’s/Big D’S BBQ on Hwy 53 East. The first Dawson County Fire Department unit arrived approximately four minutes later and reported heavy flames at the rear of the structure.

Mutual aid assistance for a ladder truck was requested from Forsyth County.  Crews had the fire under control in just under an hour but remained on scene for another two hours for salvage and overhaul operations.

There was extensive fire damage to the back deck, roof and exterior of the structure. The second floor also received fire damage. The main floor and terrace level suffered significant water damage. No civilian or fire department injuries reported. The physical address is 6564 Highway 53 East. The structure contains the businesses of Today Title Loans and Nature’s Way Chiropractic. The cause is still under investigation.

Two injuries reported in Sunday mobile home fire

Structure Fire 5858 Highway 53 East

DAWSONVILLE, Ga — Dawson County Fire Department units were dispatched to a reported working mobile home fire at 12:26 p.m. today (March 31) at 5858 Hwy. 53 East.

Engine 2 arrived on scene at 12:29 p.m. with heavy smoke and flames showing from a single wide mobile home. The mobile home was over 75% involved, therefore crews operated in a defensive mode of operation. The fire was declared under control at 12:57 p.m.

It was determined that all occupants had exited the structure. Two occupants sustained injures and were transported by Med 1 to Grady.

The mobile home was searched for any additional victims or animals, after the fire was knocked down. Crews searched the structure and found two deceased canine and felines. Firefighter’s remained on scene for several hours hitting hot spots.

The Dawson County Fire Marshall’s office is currently investigating the fire. The cause is undetermined but does not appear to be suspicious in nature.

UPDATE: Wreck with entrapment on GA 400 and GA 53

DAWSONVILLE, Ga. — Two people were injured when a Ford dump truck overturned onto a Honda Pilot Monday afternoon near the intersection of GA 400 and GA 53.

According to the Georgia State Patrol report, 59-year-old Jackie Wilson of Decatur was traveling north on GA 400 in a Ford dump truck as a Honda Pilot, driven by Ashley Andrews, 35, of Gainesville was traveling west on GA 53 in the second left turn lane. At the same time, Christopher Beck, 54, of Oakwood was traveling west on GA 53 in a Nissan in the first left turn lane.

The report also states the Andrews and Beck vehicles had started to make their left turn on GA 400 and had entered the intersection when Wilson failed to obey the traffic control device and ran the red light.

Wilson made an evasive turn to the left to avoid the collision but the rear passenger side of the dump truck struck the Nissan then overturned landing on the driver side of the Honda..

Wilson was charged with failure to obey a traffic control device, failure to maintain lane, and expired tag.
Dawson County Fire units arrived on scene along with Med units, Forsyth County Heavy Rescue and Air Life. Fire/Rescue personnel on scene, had to perform an extensive extrication to free the patient Andrews from her vehicle. Various extrication equipment and wrecker services were used to stabilize the vehicles. Once the vehicles were stabilized personnel were able to use “Jaws of Life” to free her.

Firefighters battle mobile home fire on Elliott Family Parkway

DAWSON COUNTY, Ga. –Dawson County Fire units were dispatched to a reported mobile home fire at 10:48 a.m. today (Feb.15) on Elliott Family Parkway.

Engine 1 arrived on scene at 10:55 with heavy smoke and flames showing from a single-wide mobile home.

Crews mounted an aggressive interior attack and the fire was under control and extinguished at 11:05.

The mobile home was searched for any victims or animals, the residence was given an all clear. There were no reported injuries to civilians or fire personnel. Firefighter’s remained on scene for several hours hitting hot spots.

The Dawson County Fire Marshall’s office is currently investigating the fire. The cause is undetermined but does not appear to be suspicious in nature.

Sunday fire destroys Pineridge Drive storage facility

DAWSONVILLE, Ga. — Dawson County Fire Department responded to a fire that burned a storage building at 7 Pineridge Drive Sunday at 12:54 p.m.

Heavy flames were showing from the 600-square foot building when Dawson County firefighters arrived. Crews quickly extinguished the flames and contained the structure. Minor damage was noted to a neighbor’s fence, but no civilian or firefighter injuries were reported

The incident is being investigated by the Dawson County Fire Marshal’s Office.
