Lambert Rumbles Through Dawson

Sports, Team FYN Sports

Lambert ran away with this one thanks to a big 34-point second half, taking this one 48-14 over Dawson. Dawson kept this one close in the first half keeping it a one possession game heading into halftime. Dawson now falls to 0-2 to start the season with a -46-point differential. The Tiger’s secondary was lit up by Longhorn QB Marshall Coleman as he junior finished with 364 yards and four touchdowns in this one.

Rio White/Dawson County News

Team Notes

Dawson had a decent showing from their QB in this one as Davis Glass finished 16/28 for 263 yards and a touchdown, but he did throw two interceptions in this one. He did connect with his stud WR tandem often in this one as Sr. WRs Sawyer Bearden and Dom Leblanc both finished with over 100 yards receiving in this one. Leblanc finished with 157 yards and a touchdown on seven receptions while Bearden tallied 102 yards on eight catches. The Tigers failed to establish the run game and take the pressure off Glass. Dawson finished with just 72 yards on the ground as Sr. RB Blake Arp led the way with 44 yards on six carries.

As for Lambert, Coleman dominated on the field in this one. The QB would finish 21/31 for 364 yards and four touchdowns. His favorite target EJ Hartwell finished with 11 catches for 110 yards. WR Christian Smith and Harrison Richards finished with 95 and 93 yards, respectively, while each brought in a touchdown. Jr. Branson Brooks led the way with 15 tackles in this one.

Looking Ahead

The 2-0 Longhorns will travel to Lawrenceville to take on the 1-1 Mountain View Bears. Dawson County will look to pick up their first win of the season as they play host to the 1-0 North Hall Trojans.

Plate Discipline Leads to Big Win for Tigers

Business, DCHS Baseball, FYNTV, Team FYN Sports

The Tigers plated 14 runs in a big mercy rule win over Mount Pisgah on Monday night as they won their home opener 14-4. A big win number one for new Head Coach Logan Burt. Though the scoreboard posted a big run total, the bats were rather cold in this one as the two teams combined for just 12 hits. There was a total of 20 walks, 2 HBPs, and a lot of passed balls and wild pitches. Only eight of the 18 runs scored were earned. However, once the Tigers settled in, it became clear they were the better team. Dawson ended the game scoring 13 unanswered runs.

Game Notes

Dawson got on the board in the bottom of the 1st, but Mount Pisgah responded scoring four in the top of the second as Davis Glass never settled in on the mound. J. Ward got the visitors on the board first with a big double off the wall, while A. Pullaro gave Mount Pisgah the lead following the big double with a 2-RBI single. Pullaro would then come around to score on a passed ball later in the inning. The Tigers got one run back in the bottom of the third, however the pitcher B. Bostick did a great job escaping the third surrendering just the one run as Dawson had the bases loaded with just one out. Joshua Priest did a great job in relief striking out 7 batters in 3 1/3rd.

Photo from Rio White Dawson County News

Heading into the bottom of the 5th Mount Pisgah led 4-2. Dawson had their 2,3,4 hitters due up and it felt like this was going to be their best chance to get back into this one. And they did just that. A. Peterson was in for Bostic on the mound for Mount Pisgah and he could not find the strike zone. He issued five free passes in the bottom of the 5th. The Tigers demonstrated great patience at the plate and aggressiveness on the base path leading to the big inning.

With Dawson now leading 6-4 Coach Burt turned to Banks Hickman in relief. The southpaw, in an absolute dominant showing, posted a rare 4 K inning (dropped third stirke and throwing error by Elijah Odom extended the inning) shutting down the Patriots. In the bottom of the 6th, the Tigers put the game away, literally. After batting around in the bottom of the 5th, Rucker, Horner, and Glass were due up again and what followed did not disappoint. Rucker singled to start the inning and Horner followed with an absolute moonshot down the left field line for his first big fly of the season. The Tigers would go on to score six more runs in the frame to force the mercy rule in the home opener.

Team Notes

Julian Horner demonstrated both power and patience at the plate as he blasted the big 2-run HR and drew three free passes. Joshua Priest was also a big time X-factor for the Tigers as he pitched 3 1/3 in relief allowing just two hits, two walks and seven Ks and finished 1/2 at the plate with 2 RBIs and a walk. Rucker led the team with three hits on the night while picking up an RBI as well. Glass and Odom also tallied an RBI for the Tigers. The Tigers were active on the base path as they finished with five SBs as a team.

As for Mount Pisgah, they struggled both on the mound and at the plate. Bostic did well on the mound going 3 1/3 innings allowing just one run on two hits, three walks, and recorded 4 strikeouts. Peterson however will take the loss has he allowed 7 runs in 2 innings. Mount Pisgah pitchers allowed 13 walks. It did not help that catcher B Jacobs had 14 passed balls behind the dish (unofficial).

Player of the Game

Julian Horner: 1/2 HR, 2 RBIs, 3 BBs, 2 SBs

Dawson Pulls Away Late

Dawson County High School, FYNTV, Team FYN Sports, TeamFYNSports

It was a beautiful night for football last Friday night as these two region rivals squared off in Dawsonville. It was a tale of two halves as the Tigers used a big 17-point 3rd quarter to get ahead of Gilmer and win 17-7. The Tigers defense dominated all game as they held the Bobcats to just one garbage time TD. Dawson County won this one to stay undefeated in region play. The Tigers now are just one win away from clinching the Region 7AAA title. After losing back-to-back games, the Bobcats now sit on the outside looking in and with Pickens owning the tiebreaker, Gilmer no longer controls its own destiny.

Team Notes

The Tigers offense was rather sluggish on Friday night, but they were able to rely on their defense. Davis Glass overthrew a couple passes and finished the night with just 30 yards going 3/11 in the air. Kade Moledor’s production was also a bit limited thanks to Gilmer’s tough defense, as he went for just 50 yards on nine carries. The offensive player of the game was RB Elijah Smith who finished with 104 yards on ten carries and a TD. Smith also got the Tigers some momentum in the second half as he took the opening kickoff to the house for the first points scored in the game. The defense came up huge for the Tigers once again. Unfortunately, neither Hudl nor Maxpreps posted individual stats for the defense. Kenny Nelson had a couple of sacks along with DL Kevin Haymond. Cade Adams did his job and recorded a few more TFL. Adams has recorded at least one TFL in every game this season. Will Kurtz’s name was also mentioned a few times as he dominated the offensive line.

As for the Bobcats, their first half was rather promising, but after they came out of for the second half everything seemed to fall apart for Gilmer. After a solid defensive showing, the Bobcats took a 0-0 ballgame into the second half. However, their gameplan in the second half was so predictable that Dawson kept shutting everything down. Rellinger was 1/6 throwing the ball for just 43 yards and ran the ball ten times for -20 yards. Hunter Watkins and Will Kiker combined for 13 carries and 44 yards. Brock Titus was the workhorse for the Bobcats as he ran the ball 23 times for 95 yards. Watkins was able to bring in the big 43-yard pass from Rellinger. The defense kept their team in the game but was eventually wore out by the Tigers run game and the holes got wider and wider in the second half. Aspen Hataway led the way with seven tackles.

Game Notes

As mentioned, the first half was very slow paced and there was not a lot going for either team on offense. That is until late in the 2nd quarter. Gilmer had moved the ball to the Tigers side of the field with just seconds left. Rellinger dropped back and had just enough time to get the ball down field to Watkins who was able to get up and bring down the catch inside the Dawson five. Unfortunately, the Bobcats failed to stop the clock in time and the whistles blew indicating the end of the half.

Elijah Smith returned the kickoff for a TD to open the 2nd half and then it was all Dawson. Smith had a huge second half and he added another TD on the ground. Dom LeBlanc also kicked a FG after missing on his first attempt earlier in the game. The big 17-point 3rd quarter was enough to propel the Tigers to the win.

Look Ahead

Dawson will travel to Dahlonega to take on the Lumpkin County Indians. This is a huge game and is labeled as the title game. If you can not attend, be sure to tune in as Noah Johnson and I are on the call on FYN TV. As for Gilmer, they will head into a much-needed Bye week before finishing the season at home against White County in what could be a playoff clinching scenario for both teams.

Dawson Wins Thriller to Remain atop the Region

Dawson County High School, FYNTV, Sports, Team FYN Sports, TeamFYNSports

In a thrilling back and forth game, the Tigers came out on top 31-24 on Friday night to remain undefeated in region play. Dawson used a big 17-point 4th quarter to pull away in this one. QB Davis Glass had a big 72-yard pass TD to his favorite target WR Dom LeBlanc to tie it up late in the game and then Glass punches it in on his own on the next drive to give Dawson the lead and ultimately the win.

Dawson now sits at 3-0 atop the region and Wesleyan falls to 2-2 sitting behind Gilmer thanks to Gilmer’s head-to-head tiebreaker over the Wolves. This is a huge win for the Tigers as they control their own destiny for the region title with upcoming games against Gilmer and Lumpkin.

Team Notes

QB Davis Glass turned in a clutch performance in this one as his two big 4th quarter TDs pushed the Tigers to the win. He finished 6/8 for 174 yards and 2 TDs in the air while adding another 49 yards and TD on the ground. Elijah Smith led the way for the Tigers ground game with 62 yards on 9 carries while Kade Moledor was able to find the endzone once despite a rather quiet night on offense ending with just 20 yards. Dominic LeBlanc led the Tigers in receiving yards with 100 on 3 catches, two of which were touchdowns. Kevin Haymond led the way for the defense with 6 tackles and 2 sacks with Cade Adams also getting to the QB twice. The defense limited the Wolves ground game to just 38 yards on 18 attempts.

As for the Wolves, they let this one get away from them and now they are in a tough spot in the region standings. QB Ben Brown did his part to exploit the Dawson secondary by going 16/27 for 240 yards and 3 TDs, but with no help from the ground game, his efforts were not enough. WR Jamie Tremble led Wesleyan in receiving with 180 yards on 5 catches and 2 TDs and senior Reed Purcell brought in the other TD pass from Brown. On defense, Charlie Hillegass led the way with 17 tackles.

Look Ahead

The Tigers will host their final regular season matchup against Gilmer 5-3 (2-2) as they look to shutdown the big rushing trio of the Bobcats. As for Wesleyan they will enter their Bye Week in hopes to regroup and make a push upwards into the playoffs.

Dawson Defense with Another Shutout

Dawson County High School, Team FYN Sports, TeamFYNSports

Dawson County used a big opening quarter to put this game away early, beats Pickens 27-0. Things immediately went south for the Pickens County Dragons as the QB threw a Pick 6 and then Dawson kept adding as they scored TDs on their first two offensive possessions. Dawson ran for 245 yards on the ground and Davis Glass had a good night in the air when he got the chance to throw it as he threw for over 100 yards and a TD. However, things then went south for Dawson in the second half. Between turnovers and penalties, HC Sid Maxwell was steaming on the sidelines as Dawson should have won this game by a much greater margin. Maxwell went on to say this after the game, “We played well but we just had too many mistakes and too many penalties. We got relaxed [at] 27-0. We had chances to drive it home in the first half and didn’t capitalize and never really came out and played the second half.” (Quote from Rio White of the Dawson County Newspaper). Despite the 2nd half angst, the Tigers held Pickens to just 131 yards on offense, but perhaps their biggest accomplishment of the night was late in when Pickens had 3 consecutive possessions start or get inside the Dawson 20, and the Tigers forced back-to-back turnover on downs and forced and recovered a fumble on the third. Dawson County now sits atop Region 7AAA at 3-0, while Pickens falls to 0-2. Dawson is outscoring region opponents 114-7 in their first 3 region games.

Team Notes

Dawson did enough in the first half to still call it an impressive win despite the sloppy second half. Kade Moledor once again left his mark on this game as he led the Tigers in rushing and in tackles. Moledor was able to rack up 90 yards and a touchdown on 8 carries as well as accumulate 10 tackles on the other side of the ball. Despite fumbling the ball away, Elijah Smith also had a nice game for the Tigers as he ran for 65 yards on 6 carries. Though Maxpreps nor Hudl posted Davis Glass’s stats in the air, he did throw for over 100 yards and was able to connect with Doug Pagel for a TD. Glass also kicked off the scoring for the Tigers offense as he got their first TD of the game on a QB sneak. The young QB has been impressive after his return from injury and looks ready to lead this offense down the stretch. Dom LeBlanc led the team in receiving yards with 72 yards on 5 catches. Despite the notable offensive performances, the defense as a whole gets the MVP award as they have now pitched their second consecutive shutout. Cade Adams got himself acquainted with the Pickens QB as he led the team with 3 sacks. Ian Costley also had a good game with 7 tackles, a sack, and 2 TFL. Christian Webb also had 3 tackles and put the Tigers up early with a Pick 6, on the first drive of the game.

As for Pickens, they did not do anything impressive, and this team is in shambles. Here is a look at every Pickens possession of the game in order: Pick 6, turnover on downs, 3 and Out, 3 and Out, 3 and Out, turnover on downs, 3 and Out, Halftime, 3 and Out, turnover on downs, turnover on downs, Fumble. Wow just wow, and no discredit to the Tigers defense, they are incredible but the Pickens offense must’ve not made the trip to Dawsonville Friday night. Kadyn Hampton led the team in tackles with 18 and was tied for the team lead in TFL with 3. Trey Fields and Charlie Gibbons also notched 3 TFL each. Pickens had 13 TFL Friday night.

Game Notes

As mentioned, it did not take long for Dawson to get ahead as Webb’s Pick 6 happened on the third play of the game. This gave Dawson an early 6-0 lead (missed PAT) and they did not look back. Dawson then shut down the Dragons offense again and they were able to cash in on their first two possessions. Glass took it to the house on a QB sneak and then connected with Pagel on the following drive putting Dawson up 20-0 in the first quarter. Pickens let out some frustration as the teams had a bit of a mix up and exchanged pleasantries, though the result was not impactful as both teams received offsetting unsportsmanlike conduct penalties. As we progressed through the 2nd quarter, Davis Glass was shaken up after taking a hit and left the game for a play. Unfortunately, Preston Bannister misplayed the snap and Pickens was able to recover the first of the four Dawson turnovers of the game. No harm, no foul as the Dawson defense shut down the Dragons drive and Moledor answered with a huge 65-yard TD run on the next drive. Dawson would then fumble the ball away again on their last possession of the half.

In the second half, the Dawson offense struggled, and this is not something they can do with the remaining teams on their schedule. Dawson’s first drive was stopped before it started as a offensive pass interference and a false start would push it back to 1st and 30 and they ended up punting. Pickens defense then forced a 3 and out on the second drive of the half and their offense finally moved the ball. However, the Tigers were able to stuff Pickens on 4th and goal and would then get the ball back. The Dawson defense was able to keep Pickens from scoring in three straight drives that got into the redzone keeping the Dragons score at a goose egg.

Look Ahead

Dawson will travel to Wesleyan next week to take on the Wolves who are now 3-4 (2-1) as the Tigers look to stay undefeated in region play. As for the Dragons they will host the Gilmer Bobcats who are 5-2 (2-1) next Friday night.

Dawson Brings the Heat, Dominates the Warriors

Dawson County High School, FYNTV, Sports, Team FYN Sports, TeamFYNSports

Wow. That sums up my reaction to last Thursday nights game. Wow. What a showing for the Tigers as they were able to beat White County 31-0 in a big region showdown. Though both teams struggled to get going early on, Dawson finally got it going at the end of the first half and never looked back. The Tigers defense played insanely well, and the Tigers run game slowly wore out the White County defense and the Warriors failed to limit the Dawson momentum. Dawson County held the Warriors to only 92 yards on offense and the Warriors were a poor 1/11 on third down. A trick play and a solid defense was the difference in this huge win for Dawson. Dawson County and Gilmer are the only remaining teams in this region to have not lost a region game.

Photo from Rio White Dawson County Newspaper

Team Notes

The Tigers defense dominated. They won this game by picking off the Warriors four times, one for a Pick 6, limiting them to less than 100 yards, and not allowing a single point. The offense struggled to get going in the first half but a crucial trick play to end the half gave the Tigers all the momentum and they were able to dominate in the third quarter. Led by Kade Moledor, the Tigers run game totaled 194 yards while QB Davis Glass added another 112 in the air. Moledor ran the ball 18 times for 109 yards in his first real big breakout game of the season. Not only that, Moledor made huge defensive plays all night. Unfortunately, neither Hudl nor Maxpreps had individual defensive stats for Dawson. Davis Glass also was productive in the run game as he added 69 yards and a rushing touchdown. Kenny Nelson also had a big game as he rushed for 46 yards and a touchdown while also accounting for the big Pick 6 in the 4th. Matt Bennett added the other TD as he was able to execute the epic trick play that gave the Tigers their first lead of the game. Dom LeBlanc led the team in receiving with 59 yards on 4 catches.

Unfortunately, there is not much to say on White County. Tripp Nix, who has had a great season so far, failed to have a positive impact in this one. He was 4/13 for 14 yards and 2 interceptions while only adding 11 yards on 7 carries. The Warriors threw 4 total interceptions and were held to just 92 yards on 52 plays. On defense Jacob Holbrook had 17 tackles and 2 TFL and Jon Scott also notched 17 total tackles. J.D. Trowell racked up 2 TFL while Caysen Duvall ad Devin Norton also picked up 1 TFL each.

Game Breakdown

Things were quick to go the Tigers way as they picked off Nix on the first possession of the game, but they failed to take advantage of the solid field position and were forced to punt. It was the same story for each of the teams first five drives, Dawson put together a few plays, but could not finish a drive and White County barely moved forward. That changed on the last Tigers play of the first half. HC Sid Maxwell called a TO with 18 seconds remaining to force the Warriors to punt and to Maxwell’s liking the punt was not a good one and they took over on the Warriors side of the field. With no timeouts remaining, it looked like Maxwell would try and play it safe and move into field goal range, but that wasn’t Maxwell’s plan. His offense perfectly executed a HUGE hook and ladder play as Matt Bennett ran it up the sidelines for a big 48-yard TD and gave the Tigers a 7-0 lead into halftime.

In the second half it was all Dawson County. On White County’s first possession of the 2nd half, they tried to work out their own trick play, but WR Kane Lowery threw a terrible ball that was intercepted by the Tigers which later led to a Glass TD on a designed QB run. Dawson posted 17 points in the 3rd quarter and later added a Pick 6 to really throw it into the faces of the Warriors. Dawson traveled to White County and totally owned their region rival and it would appear after this statement win, Dawson County is the favorite to claim the region.

Look Ahead

Dawson moves to 4-2 (2-0) on the season and will play host to the Pickens who is coming off a much-needed Bye Week. As for White County, they fall to 2-3 (0-1) and will host the Wesleyan Wolves on Friday night. The Wolves are coming off an impressive win against Lumpkin County last week.

Dawson Opens Region Play with Big Win

FYNTV, Sports, Team FYN Sports, TeamFYNSports

Dawson used 4 1st quarter TDs to jump out to a big lead quick as they shut down the Spartans 56-7. This win gives the Tigers a 1-0 start to region play as they look to compete for the region title this season. QB Davis Glass returned and had himself a big game throwing for 108 yards and 2 TDs and was 8 for 11. West Hall has struggled this season on both sides of the ball and Dawson was able to exploit their weaknesses, leading to a big Tigers win.

Photo by Rio White, Dawson County Newspaper

Team Notes

Dawson tallied 359 yards and 8 TDs on offense while their defense was just as good, allowing just 61 yards on defense and forced 2 turnovers. The Tigers were led by Glass in the passing game, while Kade Moledor lead the way on the ground. Moledor led the team with 71 rushing yards and 2 TDs, while Elijah Smith, Sawyer Bearden and Matt Bennett also added rushing TDs. The dynamic WR Dominic LeBlanc was able to haul in a TD pass from Glass, while Bearden also managed to tally a receiving TD.

As for West Hall, nothing seemed to go there way on Friday night. They turned the ball over twice, they managed only 61 yards on offense and tallied one garbage time score to avoid the shutout. Neither Maxpreps nor Hudl had individual stats posted for the Spartans.

Look Ahead

Dawson will travel to White County to take on the Warriors in a game that could go a long way in determining the region champ. As for West Hall, the Spartans will host Gilmer (4-1) next week.

Offense Can’t Get Going, Tigers Fall At Home

Dawson County High School, FYNTV, Sports, Team FYN Sports, TeamFYNSports

Dawson could not get anything going on offense in this one as they fall to the Stephens County Indians 38-10 as the Tigers head into the Bye Week at 2-2. Stephens County was able to win this one in the trenches as they finished just shy of 400 yards on offense, while the defense was able to limit what Dawson could do on offense. The Tigers used three QBs throughout this one and none of them seemed to find their groove with the exception of Walker Massey leading a solid drive to start the second half that resulted in a field goal and freshman Dylan Edwards connecting with Declan Rhodes for the only Dawson TD of the game.

Team Notes

Dawson County struggled on both sides of the ball in this one. The Tigers threw two interceptions in the first half, one by Massey on the first possession of the game and another thrown by Massey later in the second quarter. The run game failed to make a mark as HC Sid Maxwell tried to find a groove with two different QBs Massey, and Sawyer Bearden. The secondary got beat frequently as the Indians were able to connect on some big plays, setting themselves up for scores. Neither Maxpreps nor Hudl had individual stats posted for Dawson County.

As for Stephens County, everything seemed to go their way on Friday night. The Indians owned this game on both sides of the ball with the big boys on the line being the key difference for them in this one. Senior QB Ben Stowe totaled 178 yards on just 8 completions, 2 TDs and he ended with a 141.4 QBR. The Indians run game totaled for 204 yards and was led by sophomore RB Javin Gordon as he ran the ball 31 times for 138 yards and 3 TDs. Junior WR Jasec Smith was able to bring in 2 TDs passes and ended with 69 receiving yards.

Game Notes

As mentioned, the Tigers were unable to set the tone early as QB Massey threw an early interception on the first drive and then it was all Stephens County. The Indians cashed in on that TO as Stowe connected with Corey Richie for a big pass play and that set up a Gordon rushing TD to put the Indians up early and they never looked back.

As the first half continued, Gordon flashed his running ability as he broke a big 63 yard run breaking three tackles and using his strength and incredible footwork to his advantage. Smith brought in one of his two TDs in rather lucky fashion as the Dawson defense was able to originally break up the pass attempt, but Smith was able to adjust and bring in the tipped ball and took it to the house. Stowe then found Smith in the endzone again on their last first half possession again as Stephens County took a big 21-0 lead into the half.

Though down by three possessions, the Tigers came out strong on defense with a big TFL and forced a 3 and out. Then with the little momentum they had, QB Massey was able to piece together the most successful drive of the QB trio used throughout the first 3.5 quarters, as he connected with playmaker Dominic LeBlanc to get the Tigers in FG range. Unfortunately, after that there was very little of note as the Indians answered the Dawson FG with a Javin Gordon TD and then it was garbage time.

Look Ahead

Dawson will head into the Bye Week looking ahead to West Hall as they look to begin region play on a good note. As for Stephens County they will play host as they square off against White County next Friday.

Dawson Finds the Win Column After a Big Road Win

Dawson County High School, FYNTV, Sports, Team FYN Sports, TeamFYNSports

On a very rainy Friday night in Gainesville, Dawson stormed into the Brickyard and knocked off the Trojans, 30-13. The umbrellas were out in full force as the rain was coming down throughout the pregame and carried into the first half. But when it was time for football, the Dawson Tigers were ready. Despite some early miscommunications, where a very frustrated Coach Maxwell had to burn two timeouts in the games first 4 minutes, the Tigers dominated on both sides of the ball. Size played a factor in this one as the Tigers dominated the trenches on both sides of the ball as they gained 309 yards on the ground, while holding the Trojans to just 2 rushing yards.

Team Notes

The Tigers were led by Elijah Smith, Matt Bennett, and Kade Moledor as the three combined for 91% of the Dawson offense. Bennett had himself a nice game as he had 100 yards on the ground on 10 carries while also adding two big TDs, one for 39 yards and one to put the game away late in the 4th. Smith led the team in rushing as he had 118 yards on 18 carries while notching a TD and Moledor had 68 yards on 13 attempts and opened the scoring with an early TD run. The defense was very dominant all game and gave the Trojans very little to work with. The only obvious knock on the Tigers is they totaled 113 penalty yards.

North Hall was never in this one as they struggled to do anything against the Tigers defense. Tanner Marsh did connect with Ryals Puryear for a 62-yard scored to end the half and Marsh later connected with Sam Gailey for the other Trojans score. Their defense had nothing go their way as the Tigers ran it all over them. Trey Patterson the junior LB led the defense with 16 tackles while junior Zeke Harris and senior Alston Self had 12 tackles each.

Game Breakdown

It was a very wet day in Gainesville as they rain started around 6:30 and did not stop until halftime. The Tigers had some early communication issues forcing Maxwell to burn the two timeouts early, but after the Trojans Punter shanked his first punt of the game, it was all Tigers. Moledor and Bennett’s touchdowns put the Tigers up 13-0 in the first quarter and the Tigers defense shut down the Trojans. The Trojans were frustrated, and things became a bit chippy. Elijah Smith got his rushing TD in the second quarter and Dominic LeBlanc added a field goal to put Dawson up 23-0. However, after throwing six straight incompletions, North Hall QB Tanner Marsh was able to connect with his WR Ryals Puryear on a beautiful wheel route that went for 62 yards as the Trojans evaded the first half shutout.

The Trojans carried that momentum into the second half as Marsh connected with Gailey for a 17-yard TD pass. North Hall went for two to try and make it a 10-point game but failed to convert and Dawson led 23-13. Unfortunately for North Hall, that’s where the momentum ceased as the Tigers defense persisted and held off anything the Trojans threw their way and in the 4th quarter Matt Bennett was able to find the end zone again to put the game away.

Look Ahead

Dawson County will return home to host the Stephens County Indians (2-1) who are coming a 27-11 victory over Flowery Branch. As for North Hall, they will host the Walnut Grove Warriors (2-0).

Longhorns humbled the Tigers on Friday Night

Dawson County High School, Sports, Team FYN Sports

After a good performance in week one on both sides of the ball against Jackson County in Week 1, the Tigers never got going against the Longhorns. The first play from scrimmage was a big 80-yard pass TD for the Longhorns and they just never looked back. Every Longhorns score was at least 38 yards and they dominated both in the air and on the ground. The Tigers struggled to get anything going on offense as they managed just 201 yards and were only able to tack on two field goals as they fell in this one 49-6.

Team Notes

The Davis Glass/Dominic LeBlanc connection was the only thing working for the Tigers offense as the two connected for a big 69-yard pass, by far the longest play of the game for Dawson. Leblanc showcased some great footwork in this one, as he finished with 107 yards receiving. The sophomore Glass, however, struggled in this one as he finished just 8/26 for 142 total yards. As for the defense, nothing went right for them as they allowed 512 yards. Will Kurtz did come up with a few big plays for the Dawson defense as he finished with 2 sacks and 3 TFLs.

As for the Longhorns, everything seemed to go their way on Friday night. They outgained the Tigers by 311 yards, finishing with 326 yards in the air and 186 on the ground. Their defense was stellar as they forced six 3 and outs and never let Dawson get any momentum. They won the game in the trenches on both sides as the offensive line created some big holes while their defensive line was constantly in the backfield and held the Tigers to just 52 rushing yards. Neither Maxpreps nor Hudl had individual stats posted for Fannin County.

Game Breakdown

As mentioned, the first game of scrimmage for the Longhorns was a big 80-yard pass and after forcing a 3 and out and getting great field position thanks to a botched punt, they immediately tacked on another touchdown with a big 45-yard touchdown. The Tigers had no answer as they managed only 3 first downs in the first half with one of them attributed to a pass interference call by the refs. The big pass from Glass to Leblanc gave a little spark to the Tigers as Leblanc evaded defender after defender, breaking three tackles on the play. However, they were held to just three points. Lambert kept their foot on the gas as they notched three more big touchdowns in the second quarter, highlighted by another big 73-yard pass play, and the Longhorns took a 35-3 lead into the half.

The second half featured the same result for both teams as Lambert picked up a 77-yard TD run, and an 87-yard TD pass and the Tigers managed to add another 3 points in garbage time. We had a running clock as we started the 4th quarter and we got to see backup QB Walker Massey come in for a drive, though he fumbled the ball away.

Look Ahead

As we look ahead to next week the Dawson County Tigers will travel to North Hall to take on the 0-1 Trojans, who are coming off a Bye.
