Georgia State Patrol Identifies Cleveland Man Who Died in Saturday Crash

CLEVELAND, Ga. — The Georgia State Patrol has identified the victim of Saturday’s single-vehicle fatal crash on Town Creek Road west of Cleveland as Lance David Artis, 30, of Cleveland.
Sgt. 1st Class Anthony Coleman of Georgia State Patrol Post 6 in Gainesville said Artis died of his injuries after being thrown from his 1997 Audi A4 while driving north on Town Creek Road.
After negotiating a left curve, Artis’ car started to skid, crossed the centerline and continued off the west shoulder, striking an embankment, Coleman said. Upon striking the embankment, the car began to overturn multiple times, ejecting Artis.
Artis was airlifted by a medical helicopter from Gainesville-based AirLife Georgia 2 to Atlanta Medical Center, where he died from his injuries.
Two-Car Crash Injures Dawsonville Woman

DAWSONVILLE, Ga. – A Dawsonville woman was seriously injured in a fiery two-car crash on Dawson Forest Road Tuesday afternoon.
Georgia State Patrol Sergeant Curtis W. Bradshaw, Jr. said 21-year-old Savannah Newton of Dawsonville attempted to turn left onto Dawson Forest Road from Ga. 53 but failed to yield to a Jeep Wrangler traveling south on Dawson Forest Road and driven by 44-year-old Jenny Joyce.
Newton’s car overturned and briefly caught fire but was quickly extinguished. She was transported to Northeast Georgia Medical Center with injuries described as significant but not life-threatening.
She was cited for failure to yield right of way while making a left turn.
Joyce suffered a minor injury from an air bag that deployed, but declined to be transported to the hospital.”
The roadway was blocked for a short amount of time but traffic was able to be rerouted around the crash during the investigation and cleanup.
Suspect Tried to Drown State Trooper Before Being Shot and Killed

GAINESVILLE — Georgia State Patrol’s Operation Thunder was suspended over the weekend following a violent confrontation that ended when a suspect was shot to death and three troopers injured in Gainesville.
Rodrigo Guardiola, 36, of Gainesville was shot and killed after he fled a road check on Highway 53 designed to take impaired drivers off the highways. After a brief chase, Guardiola and his passenger Epitacio Gudino-Almazan, 31, also from the Gainesville area, exited a Ford Explorer and fled on foot.
A press release from the Georgia Bureau of Investigation states, “As one of the pursuing troopers caught up to Guardiola at a run-off creek, a struggle ensued at which point Guardiola was fighting the trooper and attempting to submerge him underwater.The trooper that was submerged and beaten fired his Taser at Guardiola with no effective impact, at which point the trooper fired his pistol striking and killing Guardiola,” according to the release.
Gudino-Almazan was captured nearby about 45 minutes later and taken to the Hall County Jail.
GBI spokesman Scott Dutton said it was not known why Guardiola and Gudino-Almazan ran and that neither was wanted by authorities.
The troopers were taken to Northeast Georgia Medical Center in Gainesville for treatment of injuries that were not life-threatening, and they have since been released.
White County Man Killed in ATV Crash

CLEVELAND, Ga. — A White County man was killed Tuesday evening when his all-terrain vehicle careened off May White Road and ran into a ditch.
Sgt. Anthony Coleman of the Georgia State Patrol said the accident happened about 6:30 p.m. as Brian Keith Seymore, 23, was driving alone on a four-wheeler in the southern part of White County. Coleman said Seymore was not wearing a helmet and was transported by ambulance to Northeast Georgia Medical Center in Gainesville where he died of his injuries.
High Speed Chase Ends in Fatal Crash in Dawson

This evening at approximately 7:15pm, August 7th, Georgia State Patrol identified a car that was placed on a be on the lookout by Gilmer County for possible DUI. The car had Louisiana plates and when Georgia State Patrol ran the plates it was found to be a stolen vehicle. The GSP Officer attempted to pull the vehicle over, at which point the driver fled, leading to a high speed chase out Hwy 52 East.
The chase continued through Gilmer County and on into Dawson county. The driver of the stolen vehicle lost control at mile marker one in Dawson County resulting in a wreck. The driver, an unidentified male, was killed in the crash. GSP has confirmed the driver of the car was dead at the scene and there were no other passengers.
Currently Hwy 52 East is closed for an undetermined amount of time while the accident is investigated. FYN will update when any new information becomes available.
