Doug Sherrill to run for Dist. 9 State Representative

News

LUMPKIN COUNTY, Ga. – Former Lumpkin County Commissioner Doug Sherill has announced that he is a candidate for District 9 State Representative.

“After careful consideration and prayer, I am officially announcing my candidacy for the Georgia State House of Representatives, 9th District,” Sherill said. “My wife and kids support me 100% in this endeavor and that was really my deciding factor.

“It seems my life has been one of servant leadership. In high school I was selected to Boys State and that whetted my taste for the political arena. I obtained a Bachelor of Science majoring in political science from North Georgia College and completed my education obtaining a Master’s degree in Public Administration from the University of North Georgia.

“As a husband and father, I have served our community in many various ways. As a coach, pastor, educator, and serving as Lumpkin County’s District 1 Commissioner, I understand public service. My most recent endeavor has been kick-starting a program at the UNG Gainesville Campus for Professional Land Surveyors as a lecturer in Legal Aspects and Geomatics.

“I believe I can provide Lumpkin and Dawson counties the leadership and conservative principles needed in this tough political climate. I am not new to politics and most of you are well acquainted with my conservative record. I have strong relationships with our current elected officials and am well acquainted with the needs of our community. As a county commissioner I played a key role in establishing budgets that cutting taxes.

“I am a strong supporter of our law enforcement and fire department. I unashamedly supported our sheriff while commissioner and the needs of our deputies. I listened and supported our other elected officials as we carefully maintained a conservative budget. We worked to improve economic development and voted to allocate funding for the Development Authority and facilitated bringing business to Lumpkin County.

“Our most distinguishing vote came when we helped to provide our local government systematic raises that they so desperately needed. I also was a strong proponent of seeking state funding for our new library. I am proud of my record as a commissioner and intend to take my abilities to the next level and stand for our community in Atlanta. I look forward to earning your support and vote. I want to run to be the voice in the state house that will best represent our community and its needs.”
