DAWSON COUNTY, Ga. — A special called meeting of the Dawson County Board of Commissioners Thursday (March 26) lasted just a shade over 5 minutes, but it brought welcome relief to county taxpayers.

Commissioners unanimously approved a property tax relief resolution that gives the Tax Commissioner authority to waive penalties and interest that accrue due to a taxpayer’s failure to meet the deadlines for filing returns of tangible personal property of business entities or for failure to pay ad valorem taxes on mobile homes by the April 1 deadline.

The authority granted by the resolution will expire on June 30 unless extended by further action of the Board.

The corona virus epidemic has had a devastating impact on Americans. As of noon today,1,525 confirmed cases had been reported in Georgia and the state’s death toll had reached 48, including three here in Dawson County. Georgians have been warned to stay at home and many businesses have been ordered to close, leaving many without a paycheck.

Healthcare officials have cautioned that the epidemic still has not peaked.
