UPDATE: Two killed in crash on Ga. Hwy. 400 Monday

DAWSONVILLE, Ga. — Two people were killed in a two-vehicle crash on Ga. Hwy. 400 near Henry Grady Highway in Dawson County Monday.
According to the Georgia State Patrol incident report, at approximately 1:32 p.m. a 2003 Lincoln Town Car was traveling south on Ga. Hwy. 400 in the left lane. A 2015 Chevrolet Silverado was traveling north on Ga. Hwy. 400 in the right lane. The Lincoln Town Car left the roadway, crossed the median, traveled into the northbound lanes, and collided head on with the Chevrolet Silverado.
The Lincoln Town Car was driven by 56-year-old Tony Ray Chastain from Dawsonville. The Chevrolet Silverado was driven by 63-year-old Colquitt Juanez Thompson from Dahlonega.
Both drivers were pronounced deceased at the scene. There were no other passengers in either vehicle. Both drivers were wearing their seatbelts.
Distracted driving does not appear to be a factor in this crash.
Drugs and alcohol are not suspected in this crash.
It was raining at the time of the crash and the roadways were wet, however neither appeared to be a factor in this crash.
The northbound lanes were closed for the investigation and cleanup until approximately 3:30 p.m.

Sugar Hill woman dies in crash on Ga. 400

DAWSONVILLE, Ga. – A Sugar Hill woman was killed and a Gainesville man injured in a two-vehicle crash near the intersection of Ga. 400 South and Dawsonville Highway today.
Sgt. Casey Coffee, Assistant Commander of Georgia State Patrol Post 37 in Cumming, reports that Sherri Deal, 55, was traveling north on GA 400 in the right lane of the left turns lanes that continue to GA 53 west when she failed to obey the traffic signal and ran a red light.
Her Toyota Prius was struck on the passenger side by a Jeep Grand Cherokee driven by Benny Smith of Gainesville.
Deal was transported to Northeast Georgia Medical Center (NEGMC) in Gainesville where she died of her injuries. Smith was also taken to NEGMC. The extent of his injuries is not known at this time.

Pickup truck crashes into building on Hwy. 53

DAWSONVILLE, Ga. – On Friday, June 29, a 2001 GMC Sierra driven by 36-year-old Jeremy Robert Kittle of Dahlonega was traveling east on Highway 53 in Dawson County when it crossed the middle lane and ran into a building at 300 Dawson Commons Circle.
Neither the driver nor his passenger, Jessica Kittle, 33, nor anyone inside the building was injured.
According to a report by the Georgia State Patrol, the driver suffered some type of medical condition that caused the wreck. Kittle’s vehicle struck a curb then the building and came to a rest with half the vehicle inside the building.
The incident was investigated by the Georgia State Patrol Office in Cumming.
Dawson County Fire Chief/EMA Director Danny Thompson said a fire engine and Med 2 responded to the incident and secured the vehicle and building.
One student killed, 20 injured in school bus crash

DAWSONVILLE, Ga. — A Dawson County teenager was killed this morning and 20 students injured when a passenger car ran head-on into a Hall County school bus on Thompson Bridge Road in Hall County.
The deceased student has been identified as Summer Faith Anderson, 13, a seventh-grader at Dawson County Middle School who was in the passenger car. An unidentified fifth-grader at Kilough Elementary School was also injured and transported to Children’s Healthcare of Atlanta.
Multiple injuries were reported to the passengers on the school bus which was transporting students to Mount Vernon Elementary. They were taken to Northeast Georgia Medical Center in Gainesville.
The accident occurred on Thompson Bridge Road near Yellow Creek Road.
Georgia State Patrol is investigating. No other details are available at this time. Fetch Your News will provide further details when they become available.

GSP urges motorists to put safety first during 4th of July holiday

ATLANTA – The Georgia State Patrol and Motor Carrier Compliance Division encourage everyone to celebrate the Independence Day holiday responsibly. This year, the holiday travel period is 102 hours long. It will begin at 6 p.m. on Wednesday, July 3, and end at 11:59 p.m. on Sunday, July 7. This year marks the one year anniversary of the Georgia Hands-Free Law which became effective July 1, 2018.
Last year, the holiday period was only 30 hours long. During the holiday period, State troopers investigated 150 traffic crashes resulting in 90 injuries and two fatalities. Additionally, troopers issued 6,367 citations (957 seat belts and 150 child restraints), 8,465 warnings, and made 123 DUI arrests.
“With a record number of travelers hitting the roadways this holiday, we want everyone to pack a load of patience for traffic delays and to put safety first by following the posted speed limit, not driving while impaired, making sure all occupants are restrained, and keeping your hands off of your cell phones,” said Colonel Mark W. McDonough, Commissioner of the Georgia Department of Public Safety. “State troopers and officers will be on high visibility patrols during the 102-hour holiday period in an effort to keep the number of traffic crashes, injuries, and fatalities at a minimum,” he added.
This holiday period, the Georgia State Patrol is participating in the Operation Zero Tolerance campaign, a nationwide mobilization against impaired driving, as well as the 100 Days of Summer H.E.A.T. (Highway Enforcement of Aggressive Traffic) campaign. Troopers will be working alongside sheriff’s deputies and police officers to apprehend impaired drivers and crack down on aggressive speeders and distracted drivers.
“Crashes caused by impaired drivers can be prevented. Drivers must take the initiative to plan ahead for their holiday activities by designating a sober driver and not driving impaired,” said Colonel McDonough. “State Troopers and Officers will not hesitate to arrest an impaired or aggressive driver,” he added.
According to AAA, the worst day to travel on the roadways in Atlanta is Friday, July 5, and the worst time for travel is between 5 – 7 p.m.

ATLANTA — St. Patrick’s Day is this weekend, and the Georgia State Patrol is reminding partygoers to put safety first. State troopers will be on patrols keeping an eye out for impaired drivers and any other traffic violations that could potentially cause a crash.
“St. Patrick’s Day is one of those holidays where troopers see a spike in impaired driving,” said Colonel Mark W. McDonough, Commissioner of the Georgia Department of Public Safety. “Driving while under the influence of alcohol or drugs is against Georgia law and compromises the safety of everyone on the road, so if you drive impaired you will be arrested,” he added.
Last year, during St. Patrick’s Day weekend (March 16-18, 2018), Georgia State Troopers investigated 304 crashes that resulted in 178 injuries and six fatalities. In addition, troopers arrested 196 people for driving under the influence and issued a total of 2,554 citations and 3,195 warnings.
The best way to prevent alcohol-related traffic deaths during this holiday is careful planning. “Partygoers should have a plan for getting home safely if they choose to drink alcohol,” said Colonel McDonough. “Designate a sober driver or make other arrangements to get home by taxi or rideshare service,” he added.
If you are the designated driver, make sure you keep an eye out for pedestrians. Also, drive carefully and defensively. You may be sober, but that may not be true for the other drivers or pedestrians on the roads. If you suspect someone is driving impaired, do not hesitate to notify local law enforcement. You could save someone’s life.
In addition to planning a safe ride home, party goers should stay hydrated and not leave their drinks unattended. Party hosts should serve lots of food, have non-alcoholic beverage choices, keep a watchful eye on their guests, and have the phone number of local cab companies on hand should someone need them. But most importantly, if you see someone who is about to drive impaired, try to help them make other arrangements to get home safe.

Friday wreck on Hwy. 9 injures Dawsonville woman

DAWSONVILLE, Ga. – A 71-year-old Dawsonville was injured and transported to Northeast Georgia Medical Center in Gainesville following a single-vehicle crash on Ga. Hwy. 9 Friday (Jan. 4).
Sgt. Casey Coffee, assistant commander of Georgia State Patrol Post 37 in Cumming, reported that a GMC Terrain driven by Marye Elizabeth Chastain was traveling north on Hwy. 9 near Apple Ridge One when she failed to maintain her lane, traveled off the roadway to the right then struck a ditch.
The vehicle rotated counter clockwise approximately 180 degrees then overturned onto the driver’s side facing southbound.
Chastain was transported to the hospital by Dawson County Emergency Services.

Six people injured in crash on Hwy. 53 Thursday

DAWSONVILLE Ga.—Georgia State Patrol is investigating a two vehicle accident that injured six people today at approximately 5:30 p.m. The accident took place near Dell Conner Construction and Buddy Burt Road.
Dawson County Emergency Services Director Danny Thompson said six patients were injured and all are in critical condition.
Thompson said one person was life flighted to Grady Memorial Hospital and a child was taken to Children’s Health Care of Atlanta Scottish Rite.
Hwy. 53 remained closed for almost two hours.

Fannin County firefighter killed by falling tree

DAWSONVILLE, Ga. — A Fannin County volunteer firefighter was killed Monday afternoon when a tree fell on his pickup truck on state Route 136 near Clear Creek Road.
Georgia State Patrol identified the man as 47-year-old Stanley Richard Henson who was in Dawson County working another job as a truck driver when the accident happened.
Georgia State Patrol Trooper Chris Jones responded to the accident. He said there was nothing Henson could have done differently to save himself.
He leaves behind a wife, who is also a Fannin County volunteer firefighter, and two teenage children.
Funeral plans have not yet been finalized.
Dawsonville man killed in single-vehicle accident

DAWSONVILLE, Ga. – A Dawsonville man was killed in a single-vehicle accident so SR 136 at 11:35 Thursday (April 25).
Georgia State Patrol SFC Curtis Bradshaw reports that a 2009 Nissan Altima was traveling north on SR 136 near Shamrock Lane. While negotiating a curve to the left, the Nissan was traveling too fast for the wet road conditions. The Nissan traveled onto the east shoulder before traveling back across the roadway onto the west shoulder while rotating counterclockwise. The Nissan struck a mailbox and several trees on the west shoulder. Excessive speed did appear to be a factor in the crash.
The Nissan was driven by 34 year old Adam Jon Hain, from Dawsonville. He was the only occupant in the vehicle. Hain was not wearing his seatbelt and was not ejected. He was pronounced deceased at the scene of the crash. Bradshaw said drugs and alcohol do not appear to be factors in the crash.

ATLANTA—Georgia State Troopers are gearing up for the July Fourth holiday travel period. The holiday period begins at 6 p.m. today (July 3) and lasts for 30 hours, ending at 11:59 p.m. on July Fourth.
Last year, the holiday period was 102 hours long. The Georgia State Patrol investigated 645 traffic crashes that resulted in 323 injuries, and nine fatalities. Additionally, troopers issued 9,983 citations, 14,767 warnings, and made 288 DUI arrests.
“During the travel period, troopers will be on high visibility patrols watching for those who are driving impaired or distracted, not wearing seat belts, and other traffic violations that could potentially cause a traffic crash,” said Colonel Mark W. McDonough, Commissioner of the Georgia Department of Public Safety. “Also, please keep in mind as you travel, that beginning July 1, Georgia law will prohibit all drivers from using hand-held cell phones while driving,” he added.
“During this time of year, troopers report that impaired driving is one of the leading contributing factors in a majority of the fatal traffic crashes that they investigate,” Colonel McDonough said. During the July Fourth holiday period, the Georgia State Patrol will be participating in the Operation Zero Tolerance campaign against impaired drivers, where state troopers will be working alongside sheriff’s deputies and police officers to apprehend impaired drivers.

Charges pending on driver of Malibu that was involved in a four-vehicle crash that injured six

DAWSONVILLE, Ga. – The Georgia State Patrol released a report today (June 25) that indicates charges are pending against the driver of a Chevrolet Malibu that was involved in a four-vehicle crash on State Road 53 Thursday that resulted in serious injuries to six people.
Sergeant First Class Curtis W. Bradshaw of the Georgia State Patrol, reports at approximately 5:16 p.m., troopers were dispatched to a multi-vehicle crash on SR 53 near Buddy Burt Road in Dawson County.
A Chevrolet Malibu, driven by 28-year-old Ashley Nicole Jett from Dawsonville, was traveling north on SR 53 in the area of Buddy Burt in the left lane at a high rate of speed. Jett was attempting to negotiate a right hand curve when she lost control of the Malibu on the wet roadway. The Malibu rotated clockwise before sliding sideways across the centerline into the southbound lane of SR 53.
A Toyota Prius, driven by 45-year-old Christopher Mackey Kelly from Demorest, was traveling south on SR 53 in this same area. After the Malibu crossed the centerline, the front of the Prius struck the right side of the Malibu.
A Honda Pilot, driven by 49-year old Sarah Elizabeth Griggs from Dawsonville, was traveling south on SR 53 behind the Prius. After the impact with the Prius, the Malibu rotated counter clockwise and the front of the Malibu struck the front of the Honda Pilot.
A Kia Forte, driven by 38-year-old Clinton Lee Decker from Dawsonville, was traveling north on SR 53 behind the Malibu. The Forte became involved in the crash when it ran over debris from the crash in the roadway.
Jett and her front seat passenger, 27 year old Robert Wallace from Dawsonville, were both ejected from the Malibu at some point. Wallace was not wearing his seat belt. It is believed that Jett was wearing her seat belt, but the seat belt broke resulting in her ejection. Jett was airlifted to Grady Memorial Hospital with serious injuries. Wallace was transported to Northeast Georgia Medical Center with serious injuries.
Kelly was transported to Children’s Healthcare of Atlanta with his seven-year-old son. The front seat passenger in the Prius, 43 year old Kathryn Kaplan Kelly from Demorest, was transported to Northeast Georgia Medical Center. Both were wearing their seat belts. The seven-year-old male was properly restrained in a child seat. All three had injuries that were believed to be non-life threatening.
Griggs was wearing her seat belt and was transported to Northeast Georgia Medical Center with what was believed to be non-life threatening injuries.
Decker was wearing his seat belt and was not injured.
The crash occurred just after a rain storm and the roadway was wet at the time of the crash.
Witnesses reported that it appeared that Jett and Wallace may have been arguing or fighting just before the crash. Witnesses also reported that Jett was driving very fast for the wet road conditions just prior to the crash.
There was no evidence that alcohol or drugs played a part in this crash.
Charges are pending in this crash.

GSP urges driver safety during Labor Day Weekend

ATLANTA — The Georgia State Patrol is reminding motorists to practice safe driving habits as they travel throughout the state this Labor Day weekend.
“Troopers and Motor Carrier Officers will be on patrol in full force for the upcoming 78-hour Labor Day holiday travel period this weekend,” said Colonel Mark W. McDonough, commissioner of the Georgia Department of Public Safety. “They will focus their attention on speeders, unrestrained occupants, as well as distracted and impaired drivers,” he added. The patrols will take place from 6 p.m. on Friday, Aug. 30, to 11:59 p.m. on Monday, Sept. 2.
Last year, troopers investigated 490 crashes, which resulted in 296 injuries. Eight of those were fatal crashes, killing eight people. In addition to crash investigations, troopers and motor carrier officers wrote 9,008 citations; 12,180 warnings; and arrested 332 motorists for driving under the influence.
“Motorists should expect heavier traffic this weekend, as most people use the extended weekend to take their final family trips before the summer ends,” said Colonel McDonough.
Here are some travel tips to keep in mind this holiday weekend:
Obey the posted speed limit. When you exceed the speed limit, you reduce the amount of available time needed to avoid a traffic crash.
Do not drive impaired. Designate a sober driver, call a taxi, rideshare service, friend, or family member to help you get home safely.
Buckle Up. Make sure everyone in the vehicle wears a seat belt and that children are properly restrained in the appropriate child safety seats. Georgia law requires children under the age of eight to be in either a car seat or booster seat suitable for their age, weight, and height.
Pay attention to the road. Limit your distractions, and never use electronic devices to text or surf the web while driving. The Hands-Free Georgia Act prohibits all drivers from using hand-held cell phones while driving.
Do not leave children and pets in hot cars. Regularly check the back seat and back floor area for children and animals, each time you exit your vehicle.
Stay alert of your surroundings and show common courtesy to other motorists and pedestrians on the roads.

Two people injured in Thursday morning crash

DAWSONVILLE, Ga. – Two people sustained non-life threatening injuries in a two-vehicle crash at the intersection of SR 9 and Dawson Forest Road Thursday morning.
According to the Georgia State Patrol accident report, a 2019 Ford Fiesta driven by Cindy Staton, 41 of Dawsonville, was traveling south on SR 9 at the same time a 1989 Toyota pickup truck driven by Iszaack Obryant, 17 of Cumming, was traveling north on SR 9.
Staton failed to yield as she attempted to make a left turn onto Dawson Forest Road. As a result, the passenger side front corner of the vehicle she was driving struck the front of the Toyota pickup truck driven by Obryant. The area of impact occurred in the northbound lane.
Both drivers were transported to an area hospital for non-life threatening injuries. Staton was cited for failed to yield to the other vehicle.

State Patrol identifies adults injured in Thursday crash on SR 136

DAWSON COUNTY, Ga. – The Georgia State Patrol has identified the adults injured in Thursday’s single-vehicle wreck on SR 136 just west of Eagle Creek Farm Road that sent two adults and three children to the hospital.
SFP Curtis Bradshaw of Post 37 in Cumming said in an email that a 2005 Buick LaCrosse, driven by 38-year-old Michael Don Land of Dawsonville, was traveling west on SR 136 when it veered off the road to the left. The LaCrosse traveled down a steep embankment and struck some small trees at the bottom of the hill.
Land and an adult passenger, 30-year-old Crystal Gooch of Dawsonville, were taken to Northeast Georgia Medical Center in Gainesville for treatment of their injuries. The driver suffered non-life threatening injuries. The adult passenger suffered serious injuries.
There were three children, ages 4, 5, and 6, in the vehicle as well. All three children were taken to Children’s Healthcare of Atlanta. Two of the children were transported by helicopter from the scene to Children’s Healthcare of Atlanta. The third was initially transported to Northeast Georgia Medical Center in Gainesville and then later transferred to Children’s Healthcare of Atlanta. Two of the children suffered serious injuries. The third child suffered non-life threatening injuries.
The crash is still under investigation.
