Dawson County responds to multiple fires over weekend

DAWSONVILLE, Ga. — On Friday, Oct. 11, Dawson County E911 received calls for a reported chimney fire at 81 Lady Slipper Lane, located inside Big Canoe. Dawson County Fire and Big Canoe Fire units were dispatched to the residential structure fire at 6:59 p.m. Big Canoe Engine 3 arrived first on scene, at 7:12 p.m. and reported a two-story single-family dwelling with over 50 percent involvement. A defensive mode of operation was declared and numerous ground cover fires were extending beyond the structure.

Big Canoe personnel deployed a rapid attack monitor and then were assisted by Dawson County Company 6.  Pickens County Station 5 provided mutual aid with an Engine and Med unit. Multiple handlines and hand tools were used to bring the fire under control. The fire was declared under control at 8:03 p.m., crews remained on scene for several hours hitting “hot spots.”

Dawson County Fire investigators determined the cause as unintentional and started as a chimney fire.

637 Hugh Stowers Road

 On Saturday, Oct. 12, Dawson County E911 received calls for a reported structure fire at 637 Hugh Stowers Rd. Dawson County Fire units were dispatched at 7:58 PM and arrived on scene, observed smoke showing from the rear of the structure. Crews advanced handlines inside and were able to obtain a quick knockdown on the fire. The fire was isolated to the kitchen but the house sustained significant smoke damage.

American Red Cross responded to assist the residents who were displaced. Dawson County Fire investigators have determined the cause to be unintentional, appears to be electrical.

Hwy. 52 East, area of Bailey Waters

On Sunday, Oct. 13, Dawson County E911 received calls for a motorhome on fire. Dawson County Fire units were dispatched at 12:37 p.m. and arrived on scene to find a motor home fully involved. Crews advanced a handline to bring the fire under control. The  motor home was off the roadway and located at a deer camp.

The cause of the fire was unintentional.
