GBI investigates death of Dawson County Detention Center inmate

DAWSONVILLE, Ga. — The Georgia Bureau of Investigation is conducting an investigation into the death of an inmate at the Dawson County Detention Center Monday (April 8).

Dawson County Sheriff Jeff Johnson confirmed via email that Joseph Michael Bishop, 57, of Dawsonville was found unresponsive in his cell at approximately 11:.47 a.m. “Deputies and Emergency Medical Personnel provided first aid, however the resuscitation attempt was unsuccessful,” Johnson said.

GBI Office of Public Affairs Director Nelly Miles said an autopsy has been completed and is pending additional tests.
