Reported Dawson County Rape Was a Hoax

DAWSONVILLE, Ga. – Area residents were alarmed after hearing a 22-year-old Dawsonville woman reported being raped in a wooded area of Dawson County Wednesday. Social media posts warned the community to be cautious and to be on the lookout for the suspect.

But Abbie D. Wesley described her attacker only in the vaguest of terms and authorities became skeptical of her account of the events. Thursday, Wesley admitted the entire incident had been fabricated.

Yesterday, she was arrested by the Dawson County Sheriff’s Office and charged with one count of False Statements and Writings (F).

Wesley originally reported the rape in the early morning hours on October 4th. During the initial investigation, Wesley tendered several statements which were subsequently disproved. Other physical evidence did not substantiate the statements being provided. During a subsequent interview, Wesley admitted that the rape did not occur.

She was booked into the Dawson County Detention Center where she is being held on $2,200 bond.

Sheriff Jeff Johnson said, “I applaud the diligent and thorough efforts of our initial responding deputies and Investigators. Their efforts were responsible for resolving this case in a timely manner. ”
