K9 Arthur tragically passes away

PRESS RELEASE – It is with profound sadness that the Dawson County Sheriff’s Office announces the passing of K9 Arthur, a cherished member of our team. Arthur, a chocolate Labrador Retriever, passed away on January 5, 2024, during a dental procedure at the veterinarian’s office.
Arthur began his service with the Dawson County Sheriff’s Office in February of 2018 at the age of one, starting as both a tracking and explosive detection dog. Born on February 18, 2017, he was six years old at the time of his passing.
Sergeant Totherow, who recently transitioned to the Hall County Sheriff’s Office, had been Arthur’s dedicated handler since their partnership began.
Their bond was a testament to the special relationship between a K9 and their handler, demonstrating the commitment and trust that develop through years of service together. Sergeant Totherow shared a deep connection with Arthur, and their teamwork was evident in the successful operations they conducted.
Recently, Arthur had been in the process of transitioning to a new handler, Deputy Elder. The training period with Deputy Elder showcased Arthur’s adaptability and his willingness to continue serving the community under the guidance of a new team member.
“K9 Arthur was full of life and energy and loved his job of serving the citizens of Dawson County,” said Deputy Elder.
Arthur’s remarkable career included winning 1st place as an Explosive Detection Dog during a regional competition.
His skills and dedication were further demonstrated through 166 live deployments, which ranged from bomb threats, school sweeps, sporting events, to courthouse security. His contribution to the safety and security of the community was invaluable.
“K9 Arthur was more than just a bomb-sniffing dog; he was a cherished member of our law enforcement family. His loyalty and dedication were exemplary, leaving an indelible mark on all who had the privilege of working alongside him,” said Dawson County Sheriff Jeff Johnson.
The entire Dawson County Sheriff’s Office is deeply saddened by the loss of K9 Arthur. The impact of his service will be remembered by the community and law enforcement alike.
