Dawson County voters will go to the polls Monday amid coronavirus outbreak

DAWSON COUNTY, Ga. – In the midst of a public health crisis, Georgia voters will begin the process of electing their federal, state, county and city officials. Early voting in the Presidential Preference Primary/General Primary/Non Partisan Election begins Monday (May 18).

All votes in the early voting period will be cast at the Dawson County Elections and Registration Office, 96 Academy Avenue in Dawsonville. Voting will continue Monday through Friday from 8 a.m. until 5 p.m. until June 5. Saturday voting will be available on May 30 from 9am to 4 pm. Election Day is June 9.

In addition to casting a ballot for President, U.S. Senate, U.S. Congress, Georgia state senate and House of Representatives and a host of “down ballot” races, Dawson County voters must decide if a one percent sales and use tax shall be imposed in Dawson County for a period not to exceed five years and for the raising of not more than $45,000,000 million for transportation.

There are also quite a few non-binding questions on both the Republican and Democrat ballots to be answered.

Republicans will be asked three questions:

• Should Georgia lawmakers expand educational options by allowing a student’s state education dollars to follow to the school that best fits their needs, whether that is a public, private, magnet, charter, virtual or home school;

• Should the Republican Primary be limited to voters who have registered as Republicans;
• Should candidates for Board of Education be required to declare their political party?

Democrats will be asked 10 questions, including but not limited to:

• Should every eligible voter be allowed to register to vote on Election Day
• Should the criminal justice system end the discriminatory cash bail system
• Do you believe every Georgian has a right to affordable, accessible healthcare
• Should every Georgian who has served their sentence for a crime have voting rights restored
• Do you believe that public schools should receive adequate funding for all programs and public money should not be used to support private schools.

Some Georgians had already voted when the COVID-19 pandemic hit Georgia and Governor Kemp declared a public health emergency and suspended all voting. Secretary of State Brad Raffensperger has said those votes will be counted if those voters do not vote again in the June 9 primary.
