County to Receive New Fire Engine, Phone System

DAWSONVILLE, Ga. – Dawson County firefighters are about to be outfitted with a new fire engine. County Commissioners approved a lease/purchase to replace Engine 7, which had the highest hours and mileage in the county’s fleet.

Emergency Services Director Lanier Swafford explained at a recent work session that repair costs for the fleet of fire trucks approached $10,000 and that a catastrophic failure had occurred in one pump that would cost a minimum of $15,000 to repair.

The cost to replace Engine 7 was budgeted in the 2018 budget. The lease/purchase agreement will be executed under a Cooperative Purchasing agreement with the Florida Sheriff’s Association. The maximum cost is $75,034 per year for seven years at an interest rate of 2.44 percent. Delivery is expected to be after January 2.

The county offices will receive a phone system upgrade for the Government Center, Sheriff’s Office, Fire Stations 1, 2 and 7, the Senior Center, Voter Registration, Veterans Memorial Park and the Transfer Station.

The cost projection in SPLOST VI was $250,000, but that amount was reduced to $128,000 due to reallocation of Government Center phones and programming and purchasing of Network equipment by the IT Department.

The Board unanimously approved a one-year contract extension for County Manager David Headley.

Commissioners also approved:

  • A request to apply for the Georgia Emergency Management Agency (GEMA) K-9 Grant at no cost to the county;
  • A second Surplus Asset Disposal List for county vehicles identified as exceeding service life;
  • Approved a bid of $70,500 to replace tires on county vehicles and equipment from four individual vendors;
  • A contract with Indent Electrical Services to provide on-call electrical services;
  • A contract with Townley Construction Company to provide on-call plumbing services;
  • An addendum to the FY18 Legacy Link agreement;
  • A county-wide Phone Replacement System;
  • The 2018 Payroll and Holiday Calendar;
  • The 2018 Board of Commissioners Meeting Schedule;
  • A special event alcohol permit application for the Chamber of Commerce Business After Hours event on Nov. 14.
