Movie Industry Interest in Georgia Raises Concern

GAINESVILLE, Ga. – The movie industry’s interest in Georgia has exploded in recent years, resulting in a massive $9.7 billion economic impact for the state. But recent allegations of sexual misconduct by American movie producer Harvey Weinstein, have raised questions about Georgia lawmakers unwavering commitment to the industry.

Conservative groups like the Lanier Republican Assembly (LRA) have expressed serious concerns.

LRA President Kimberly Pils said Monday that her organization supports quality entertainment but added, “Republican elected officials should reevaluate their commitment to the film industry, embrace conservative principles and support healthy family-focused media.” The LRA challenged legislators to balance budgets without acceptance of funding from sources that degrade American family values.

In a press release, the LRA pointed out that “recent national headlines exposed Hollywood values that not only involve investigations by multiple U.S. law enforcement groups, but also Scotland Yard and Interpol. The allegations regarding the Hollywood behavior are disturbing and an affront to the conservative values espoused by the Lanier Republican Assembly.”

The LRA is a conservative political organization based in ten counties, including Dawson, White and Lumpkin. It was chartered on July 31, 2017 by the Georgia Republican Assembly. Both Republican Assemblies are affiliated with the National Federation of Republican Assemblies nationwide.
