Dawson County BOC approved the widening of Elliot Road

DAWSONVILLE, Ga. – The Dawson County Board of County Commissioners unanimously voted to widen Elliot Road at the Sept. 16 meeting Thursday night.

Elliot Road in Dawson County originates on SR53 East and terminates on Sunset Drive.

The project will cost around $23,000 and will be funded through the SPLOST VI.

The budget for the project takes into account the engineering design services needed to address all the outstanding issues with Elliot Road.

The goal of the project is to improve the dual travel lanes, width for right-of-way and to improve line of sight for drivers.

Denise Farr, Director of Public Works Director for Dawson County addressed the board with the proposal for Elliot Road

“It will be a complete overhaul of the road, to not only widen it but realign it,” Farr said.

Currently, Elliot Road has asphalt paving widths from 12 to 23 feet.

However, the recommended asphalt width for dual travel lanes is 22 feet.

Also, the recommended minimal width for right-of way for dual travel lanes is 40 feet. Elliot Road’s right-of-way is approximately 12 feet.

Farr mentioned the poor alignment of the road has also caused several problems and it is “a safety hazard to both pedestrian and vehicular traffic.”

Sharon Fausett, Dawson County Commissioner, added that she thought the road couldn’t be redone soon enough in the interest of public safety.

“It is just so unacceptable for a road,” Fausett said.

The timeline for the project was said to take three to four months for the engineers to complete their process.
