Special Weather Statement for Far North Georgia
Community January 5, 2022Dawson County feels brunt of winter storm
Community, News February 8, 2020Dawsonville, Ga. – Dawson County has not been immune to the road problems plaguing our region as a winter weather storm moves through the area.
The Dawson County Sheriff’s Office (DCSO) released a statement to the public: “We ask that you PLEASE resist the urge to take a ride and see the roads. There are multiple accidents at multiple locations and we have all hands on deck trying to get everyone taken care of. PLEASE stay off the roads if at all possible.”
Dawson County Government Facebook page reiterated this message, “Please stay off the roads if you can. Authorities are responding to numerous accidents and other issues this morning in Dawson County related to the snowy weather.”
Many of the roads in the county have become impassable. Among these roads Hwy. 53 west of downtown Dawsonville and Gober Hill at Hwy. 53 are currently closed. The DCSO also notes that Hwy.53 and Hwy. 9 are impassable and Hot Pepper Place to 183 has multiple cars off the road.
Dawson County Fire and Emergency Services released that the Dawson County Public Works crews are out working county roads, however, road conditions have not improved since earlier today. GDOT is working on state roads/hwys.
GDOT is plowing Hwy. 53 from Hwy. 400 towards downtown Dawsonville.
Dawson County Fire and Emergency Services also wants the public to be aware that “if you see an abandoned car on the side of road with caution tape on the mirrors that vehicle has already been checked by Public Safety Personnel” and adds that they will continue to monitor the weather and road conditions and update. Again, they urge people not to drive until the snow passes.
The Dawson County Sheriff’s office would also like the public to know who to call if they are in need of assistance: “As always, call 911 for emergencies and 706-344-3636 for non-emergencies.”
FYN will continue to bring you weather updates throughout the day.
