Three Dawson County homes burned following Fourth of July fireworks display

DAWSONVILLE, Ga. – Five homes were damaged and 11 people displaced by a massive fire the state fire marshal’s office says was started by fireworks that were improperly discarded after a Fourth of July celebration.

Dawson County Fire Chief Danny Thompson said firefighters responded to a 911 call shortly after midnight to find the homes at 38, 48 and 60 Burts Crossing Drive heavily involved. A second alarm was then transmitted and units from Forsyth County Fire Department responded.

“The fire was brought under control at 1:16 a.m. Thursday morning,” Thompson said. “Fortunately there were no injuries to civilians or firefighters.”

Thompson said in addition to the three homes that were burned, the homes at 10 and 29 Winding Creek Drive sustained heat damage.

Thompson said fireworks shot off during the Fourth of July celebration were placed in a trash can and doused with water but reignited themselves.

Homeowner Mike Wolski told CBS-46 in Atlanta, he’s the one who shot off the fireworks, and he is devastated by the destruction.

“I feel like I am still in a dream and I am going to wake up and think this was a terrible nightmare,” Wolski told the television station. “If it were not for God – and this happened in the middle of the night – I just can’t even think about it.”
