Two Snakebites Reported in Dawson County

Copperheads are most often found in woodpiles, brushy areas and waterways.

DAWSONVILLE, Ga. – Two Dawson County residents suffered snake bites this weekend. On Saturday, an individual was bitten by a copperhead and was transported to Mountainside Hospital in Jasper. The second was bitten by a non-venemous black snake and did not request transport.

Dawson County Deputy Fire Chief Tim Satterfield cautioned residents to be aware that more snake sightings are expected at this time of year.

“Especially with all the rain we’ve had recently,” he said. “That seems to bring them out.”

Dr. Gaylord Lopez, director of the Georgia Poison Center told Fox 5 News recently that it has been a busy season for snake bites. 2016 was the busiest year for snake bites until this year when they have increased by 60 percent.

“It didn’t get cold in north Georgia, so they were out and causing a lot of problems,” Lopez added.

Most snakebites are by Copperheads, which are found around brushy areas, woodpiles, and waterways. Their bites are painful and often land victims in the hospital, but are rarely fatal.
